Seems to be some kind of nasty block-evading system operating at:activitypub-proxy.cfTo quote the site itself:"A simple proxy for ActivityPub that lets you circumvent blocks by masquerading as another domain name...""...say you want to follow (someone) but the woke administrator has blocked you..."Whoever is behind this is deliberately avoiding blocks and helping others to do so too.#Fediblock

Seeing certain business people who have just joined the Fedi posting that Venure Capital and algorithms etc are "inevitable" on the Fediverse, and that we should embrace them, because they are somehow innately better than volunteers or small non-profits etc.If for-profits are innately better, why are they here? Why did they come to a volunteer-built network?Truth is this: VC firms are shallow vampires trying to exploit trends by making everything for-profit.

British Rail was the state-owned company which ran the UK's railway network from 1948 to 1997. It didn't do anything else, just trains and public transport.Inexplicably, in 1973 it patented a nuclear fusion-powered flying saucer with an artificial gravity generator, creating a graviton field using high energy electrons. Here's the patent:https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search?q=pn%3DGB1310990Here's an in-depth look at the whole bizarre situation:https://allthatsinteresting.com/british-rail-flying-saucer#Space #Spaceflight #Tech #PublicTransport

Reminder that whatever you store on an internet site will one day vanish, even if it's stored on the largest and richest site in the world:"Myspace, the once mighty social network, has lost every single piece of content uploaded to its site before 2016, including millions of songs, photos and videos with no other home on the internet."https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/mar/18/myspace-loses-all-content-uploaded-before-2016Please don't rely on internet services to exist forever, they will all disappear eventually.Try to store copies of important stuff offline if you can. Music, video, photos etc can all be stored locally.

Why does YouTube still try to push videos by far right idiots at me on the front page? No, I don't want to watch a video where Ben "dry pasta noises" Shapiro shouts down a black woman.I have never watched a video by any of these extremists or anyone connected to them, they are vile. Are far right people gaming the YouTube algo, or is YouTube trying to provoke people into "engaging" with videos they will probably hate, or is someone at YouTube/Google itself into far right stuff?#YouTube #Politics #Google

@rysiek Can I do a shoutout for messaging on XMPP Jabber?I know it's not the easiest thing to sign up on historically, but there are people working on this like @joinjabber and @snikket_im Once you're signed up, it works well. The JoinJabber website is still in its early days, but it seems very promising:https://joinjabber.org#XMPP #Jabber

Nowadays it's a common belief in tech circles that copy-pasting an internet address of any kind is too difficult for non-technical users. How can this be true when most of us have typed website addresses, email addresses and phone numbers manually for decades? My grandmother dialed phone numbers by hand, often from memory, on a rotary phone with no display. She wasn't technical in the slightest, but found phones very easy to use.Why is the tech industry infantilising people like this? Is this the aim of commercial tech companies now, to insert themselves unnecessarily into everyday life?@onepict raised a similar point about the "what three words" location system, which is trying to replace the free open co-ordinate system the entire world has used for centuries with a closed copyrighted monetised system they control. Why are people letting themselves be conned into thinking easy things they've done for years are suddenly too difficult for them?

Just noticed a couple of mildly disturbing Mastodony things...-As many people have noted already, the official Mastodon app now openly tries to get people to join mastodon.social, with other servers relegated to an "other server" button.-If you click on a mastodon.social link in other apps in iOS, this opens the link within the Mastodon official app automatically. This doesn't work for links from mstdn.social or other servers I've tried....is there some internal push at Mastodon gGmbH to use the official apps to make a mastodon.social-based network?I'd love to know the reasoning behind these moves.#Mastodon

(sigh)Just spent evening going through posts claiming that only nerds care about federation. These are not nerdy issues, these are societal issues. I am not a developer, I joined the Fediverse because I was worried about the behaviour of Facebook, Twitter etc.I get that centralised networks are easier to sign up on, but they are harder to leave. You're giving them control over your online social life. It's like that XKCD cartoon about infrastructures, it's sometimes difficult to get across to people that it's not about technical standards per se, but the shift in power that tech standards represent. That's why centralised tech companies put so much effort into controlling tech standards, not because they're nerds but because they are power-hungry and greedy.

Bot makers, friends of bot makers:Could someone create a bot that shows what percentage of Mastodon and the Fediverse (in users and MAU) are on mastodon.social? And show these percentages on a graph as well? This could be a good tool in keeping an eye on how centralised this place is becoming, and get across to others what the danger is.(At the moment m.s seems to be about 14%. Who knows where it will go now that the official app is just telling people to sign up on mastodon.social.)#AskFedi

Saying the Fediverse has to grow through centralisation is like saying a vegetarian restaurant has to grow by selling meat.Alternatively, here's an analogy for car lovers: you want to drive somewhere quickly, do you just instantly press the pedal down as far as it will go? No, you have a look and see what's ahead, and occasionally slow down because you want to survive the journey. You will not get anywhere quickly if you crash. Why be on the Fediverse if you want it centralised? What's the point? Why not just use one of the many, many centralised networks out there? And why are there so many people arguing for growth at any cost? Have they not seen what this did to all centralised social networks?

Well, the official Mastodon app’s onboarding still has mastodon.social as default, even after an update. I think this shows intent by Eugen to keep this permanently. Just personally, this has now crossed a line for me.Very disappointed 😞#Fediverse #Mastodon

There's an excellent new summary by @erictopol of research about how Covid affects the brain:➡️ https://erictopol.substack.com/p/the-brain-and-long-covidHighly recommend you read and give them a follow.Briefly, there is concern about the long term effect of Covid on the brain, even in people who have mild symptoms or are asymptomatic. It urgently needs further study to find out what we are dealing with.#Covid #Covid19 #Coronavirus #Health #Pandemic

Just reading a Wikipedia article on the Nazi occupation of France. There is a heck of a paragraph quoted from "Occupation: The Ordeal of France" (1999) by Ian Ousby:"There was no sign of public opposition to (anti-Jewish laws), or even widespread unease at the direction in which events were heading ... Many people, perhaps even most people, were indifferent. In the autumn of 1940 they had other things to think about; later they could find little room for fellow-feeling or concern for the public good in their own struggle to survive. What happened to the Jews were a secondary matter; it was beyond their immediate affairs, it belonged to that realm of the 'political' which they could no longer control or even bring themselves to follow with much interest."This is surely something of what we see today with people saying they don't like to "get political" when a clear human rights violation is brought to their attention.#HumanRights #Apathy #Nazis #Politics
