@bmp I have seen far too many places, even in what should be professional work with actual typography, using two hypens in a row instead of an em dash. Now, I have a tendency to use an en dash in place of a simple hyphen, only because in most typefaces the hyphen is ugly ; an em dash for number ranges ; and an em dash with spaces before and after for parenthetical phrases. Some typefaces also offer a quotation dash, which should be a smidgeon longer than an em dash.

@publius The dificulty in finding em dash in many keyboard layouts and text editing software doesn't help many folks use the required dash (assuming they are looking for it). I've noticed that variable fonts tend to have better looking dashes (hyphen, en dash and em dash).

@bmp I use LaTeX a lot, and the automatic conversion of "--" to en dash and "---" to em dash is something I cherish. For use on the Internet, I keep a text file open on my desktop with the most-frequently-used special characters.

@publius Interesting approach with the textfile, is there a public version of this? I used to have a custom set of bash scripts, but have moved to Espanso now for text replacement (https://espanso.org/) and extremely happy with it so far.

@bmp I just paste in the characters I find myself using frequently. In fact, it might be a perfect application for Xpad, which I always forget about.
