@animeirl I think my favorite steve jobs story is when they got a guy in for a job interview early on in the company. jobs thought the guy was nerdy and didn't fit the culture so he kept asking him questions to mess with him, until finally he asked the candidate if he was a virgin, had he ever had sex. the guy got up and said he'd leave, then after he was gone they all had a laugh.

The customs officials didn't let him. He was absolutely livid and swore never visit Japan again - and he kept his word, AFAIK. Although, he died pretty soon thereafter.

@icedquinn @Moon @animeirl Nope, both Allen and Gates were code monkeys, although I have no idea how they compared to each other. Do remember in recent reading that Allen coded up the 8008 emulator on a mainframe that was one of their biggest early competitive advantages, but Gates per old stories rewrote their 8080 BASIC interpreter on the flight from Boston to Arizona where Altair was located.Ignoring all the details, do you have any idea how rare programming talent was back then? Due mostly to computers/computer time being so rare and expensive?

@icedquinn @mitchconner @Moon @animeirl Jobs was adopted, so not exactly….Gates on the other hand belonged at Harvard, did OK in Math 55 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_55) which made his really appreciate there were smarter people than him in the world (compare to RMS who thrived in it). Did more math stuff later, probably could have gone down an academic math/CS path if he wanted to. But the lure of writing software and making money which he had done before going to Harvard was lots stronger, and he was born at the right time for that.

Harvard and Princeton for science and math and maybe some other STEM topics, not sure about the others and their fields.Or if you’re a legacy and/or athletic admit (something they don’t really want anymore unless they’re Jews) you can slide. A friend got into MIT but due to family pressure attended Harvard in the 1980s (I think he father had gone there) was appalled the math requirement was proving you could do algebra. (He was a CS type, not a Math 55 type).

Borland on the other hand was late and not so good at business.Cheap computers are today so much faster, “bigger” etc. you can use much higher level languages and tools, have much more of a foundation like web browsers and servers to build upon, so pure technical failure is less common. But it was for example a key to why Facebook for example beat Friendster.Well, VC’s kicking out the founder and not caring if it took literal tens of minutes or maybe hours in favor of doing deals had a lot to do with that. Also should note post-2002 SarBox the big wins in VC were essentially over, so it attracts a much lower grade of financial talent. Basically they make their money in most everything but a successful IPO.
