Okay, everyone. I am going to throw a nutty.A person just told me this (name removed. If you find the person, do not pile on.)What the person said is typical of social media and absurd. To respond to Dominion settling for 787.5 million by saying "We want justice" is immature and silly.Justice in civil cases means that the person who does damage (Fox) pays the damage. Dominion was harmed and received compensation that it is happy with.Rant continuing . . . 1/

@Teri_Kanefield unfortunately the thing that would have been most helpful in terms of the public interest (as opposed to the private interest of Dominion) is not part of the settlement. Per the NYT: "Under the terms of the settlement, Fox News will not have to apologize or admit to spreading false claims on network programming..."

Yes, I would have loved to see Fox dragged through an embarrassing trial, but courts of law do not exist to give me the show that I want.Yes, I know it's frustrating that Fox lies, and that people like Jim Jordan get elected to office, and that a political party supports Donald Trump, but there are no magic bullets that will make these things go away. Saving democracy is tedious work and up to each of us."We are starved for justice" has no meaning. rant over (maybe)2/

@blueemu Right. I am using justice to mean "people who do harm pay for the harm."That person is using "justice" to mean "I want all the bad guys punished so they all disappear and then we won't have any more bad guys and if any bad guys are still around then there was no JUSTICE"(Then you cry)

@blueemu I read the definition, and I don't see "JUSTICE MEANS I GET WHAT I WANT"https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/justiceThe reason we have dictionaries is because if people use words in different ways, nobody can communicate.Justice in civil cases literally means that people who cause harm pay for it.Look up civil law and civil litigation.

@Teri_Kanefield1. Please point to where anyone said "Justice means I get what I want."2. Please point to the definition that states "Justice is whatever the court says it is."A bunch of us were hoping to get as much justice (conformity to fairness) as possible, i.e. Fox being drug through an embarrassing trial, and you're pissy because we thought that might happen? This is becoming tedious, so if you respond to this with more snark, we're done.

@Teri_Kanefield but too many have seen how bad actors like Trump have settled lawsuit after lawsuit out of court with no admission of guilt and terms often sealed under NDA. Years later they will claim they did nothing wrong but just settled for financial reasons. And then they continue with their abusive nature.Fox has undoubtedly saved money by settling, and probably made more from advertisers during their fallacious segments in 2020. They'll count it and report it as a win.

@Teri_Kanefield lolI am always disappointed by out of court settlements. I think they serve rich defendants well and cause litigants to take what they can get while facing protracted legal fees and an unsure outcome. I think the system is designed, whether intentionally or not, to favor rich bullies. All that said, Fox paid and Dominion collects. I can wish Dominion had held out for more without whining about the obvious fact that stuff isn't fair.

@Teri_Kanefield a couple of hours on and still not a peep about the settlement anywhere on their so-called "News" website. If the settlement didn't include some substantial mea culpa from Fox that their viewers will not be able to avoid (ie. not a foot note at the bottom of a never visited web page or broadcast a 3am) then its easy to see how some may see this as a lack of justice.

Where does Democracy settle in against Propaganda? Please inform me! I am anxiously waiting! FOX should have had to issue televised apologies for propaganda to the public for dollars. Where is THAT Statement? You be sad. I am raging.

@dbc3 In California, there can be penalties if you refuse a settlement offer but don't do better at trial. If every case went to trial, the courts would be way too overloaded.

@Teri_Kanefield they shouldn't have settled for so little. Fox could have paid them $22 billion to settle, and that would be enough to not drag out more of their dirty laundry in court.

@Teri_Kanefield it's okay to disagree with Dominion's decision, even if Dominion is happy with it for the short term. There are ramifications for our supposed democracy and even our economy based on this case. They may be the plaintiff, but this affects us all.

@pestoquiche80s Lawsuits are not brought for the benefit of anyone except the parties to the lawsuit.Whether the public will be pleased is not a consideration in whether to accept an offer.

@Teri_Kanefield I don't disagree with what you're saying (not that I would have any standing to do so). But as we giddily applaud Fox News handing out $787.5 billion to make the case go away, we have to look at it in scale. This is nothing to filthy rich Murdoch who can pay this settlement out of pocket and not feel a thing. It's chump change to him.

@Teri_Kanefield @bigheadtales I've been impaneled as a juror in civil cases. Trust me, the jurors in the Dominion case have gone home singing and dancing, knowing they have their lives back because of the settlement. But what about the special master? Does that just disappear now?

@Teri_Kanefield i get that. They settled for roughly half, and i imagine juries probably go below the demand more than above. So give or take a few hundred mil, it was reasonable. I wish we coulda had the worst offenders on the stand admitting under oath, and if it had fallen that way I'd love it, but it was Dominion's suit and their decision. They don't owe me a thing.

@Teri_Kanefield same comment. politicians who raise money by falsely telling constituents deceptions should be prosecuted. In Jordan's case though I'm unclear if he really does comprehend his own falsehoods.
