Folks use technology in different ways and many of the assumptions from educators are ableist. -The student taking photos of slides may have ADHD and struggle to remember details.-The student typing their notes may have arthritis and have difficulty holding a pen.-The student recording the lecture may have auditory processing disorder and will create a transcript later.#teaching #education #ableism #HigherEd #learning #notetaking #notes

@theADHDAcademic if you have a student taking photos of slides, pull out a USB stick, copy the deck, and give them the copy. Seriously. I would have _paid_ my students to take home study materials, sheesh. If they need to type their notes, I'll make sure they have a copy of mine too. If they need to make a transcript, "whisper" exists. If they just learn better by typing (I learn better writing), then by all means, sit front and center where you can see best. Back when I taught, I kinda thought it was my job to teach. That means meeting student's needs. I would always be versed in the tools available to help them succeed with the lowest workload for both of us.

@theADHDAcademic All we’re encouraged in my classroom when I taught. I can see no good educational reason to oppose them. People learn in different ways. If a teacher doesn’t want to be recorded, they probably shouldn’t be speaking. Ditto for photographs and slides/whiteboards. It is 2023, after all.

@gretared @theADHDAcademic Agreed. I have to provide "reasonable accommodation". I'm not certain that ADHD is covered, but also don't care. It just makes sense for everyone that I do whatever I possibly can to make people comfortable and productive. Duh, right?

@gretared @theADHDAcademic That's another plus side to accommodating everyone - I never have to worry about my/ company legal exposure.
