@marcan Why would any freedom-respecting person want to watch television anyway?

@marcan The project you linked to said the spec is deliberately ambiguous to make implementation difficult and that they had to implement unspecified things to make it work.

@Zergling_man of course it is, as far as I can tell your statement is senseless unless it's some form of sarcasm or similar.

@marcan The FSF really have been doing a lot more harm than good to their cause over the last decade.Their recent blog post about JPEG-XL support being removed from Chromium used the following phrasing:"While we can't link to Google's issue tracker directly because of another freedom issue -- its use of nonfree JavaScript -- we're told that..."The brainworms are strong.

@pbarker @marcan "...we're told that the issue regarding JPEG-XL's removal is the second-most "starred" issue in the history of the Chromium project, ..." ?A number of stars on the issue is not critical information in the article, and is dynamic, so what's not okey to rely on a couple of community members reporting?

@pbarker @marcan "...we're told that the issue regarding JPEG-XL's removal is the second-most "starred" issue in the history of the Chromium project, ..."Is star number on repo that much important information to not just rely on a couple of community reports?

@marcan the article says: > On the client side, B-CAS is typically implemented by a card that plugs into a compatible receiver, or alternatively by a tuner card that plugs into a computer.and videolan says:> After full reception of EMM, the B-CAS Card ID will be matched and processing done by the card.so, it is exactly as the article is saying? the processing part is done by the card which is proprietary ?am i missing something here?

@marcan The RTL-SDR was based on an ISDB-T receiver (and made from) iirc, and still can be used as such with the original drivers

@pbarker @marcan Nonfre JS it's still nonfree. That's the FSF since forever. There are no excuses to run propietary software, ever. You can always run any other webkit4gtk based browser in the wild or code your own as the are zillions of small browsers inspired by uzbl/surf.

@anthk @pbarker @marcan yet they're perfectly okay with proprietary firmware, as long as the user is stripped from the ability of upgrading it. that would be funny if people didn't take them seriously

@marcan @charlotte @asu @anthk @pbarker Keyboards and mouse are possible thanks to nerds building their own. (QMK is the firmware that's typically used)But for things like storage, displays, scanners, paper printers, … you're going to have proprietary firmware.

@charlotte @asu @anthk @pbarker @marcan And there's basically no reason to write firmware replacements for keyboards/mouses.For printers that could be more interesting but given AirPrint and laser printers being more and more cheap (inkjets are a complete scam), I think it's also becoming irrelevant.

@kemra102 @marcan The embarrasing would be stating that watching TV with propietary FW needed for TV tuners would be "fine" for free software which in reality it isn't.It the cards don't straightly work with linux-libre, then watching the Japanese TV requires non-free software. Period. If there is some TV tuner (for the Japanese standards) with libre drivers, then you are right.
