Hey #MastoAdmin, I'm interested in- How many users your instance runs right now? Total/Active?- What specs do you have (RAM, vCPUs, media storage)?- What amount per month are you paying for it right now in total (including hosting, storage and other costs)?- What is your current storage size and database size?- What version of #Mastodon do you run?- Do you run a closed/open/invite only instance? Thanks in advance!

I'm still considering in opening this instance, this is why I'm asking. I want to know a bit more about the resources it would take. Many have said it's not recommended, but I still want to know more about it.Here are my answers:1. I currently have 4 users, 2 active including myself and my wife2. vCPUs, 8GB RAM3. Hetzner4. Cloudflare R25. 29.69 € in total, including storage6. DB: 11.2 GB, Storage: 558 GB7. v4.1.28. Closed9. Very smoothly right now, I have scaled one time because wanted more space for the DB and got rid of slower storage box which I replaced with fast zero egress Cloudflare R2

@rolle +1 for Hetzner. They also do pretty cheap 7 day auto backups.

@rolle Suomi.social1. 16 total/11 active users2. 4G RAM, 2vCPU, 1T storage (currently 173G) + Elastic Search on another (same as rele.suomi.social)3. Hetzner in Finland4. Hetzner Storage box5. €23,50, but this includes also rele.suomi.social and a dev/staging server 6. Storage 173G, database: 8G7. Latest 4.1.28. Closed/invite9. Yes, very smoothly. I recently added a lot of new relays, but still it is quite smooth - only the storage is now growing strongly. I tried to run this on a smaller instance, but apparently 4G RAM is absolute minimum.

@rolle 1: 2 users, 1 active.2: 2 CPUs, 4GB RAM, 40GB storage.3: host in the house behind Cloudflare4: Cloudflare R25: for mastodon, 20 for Cloudflare pro domain, and less than $1 for the storage. I don't want to include ISP/ASN/IP Space charges cause it would cost me closer to 700 quid a month if I did!6: psql is around 100 MB. images are around 30 GB. 7: 4.1.28: I think its invite-only....

@rolle why insist on using Mastodon when there are better alternatives?

@jorijn Thanks for answering! I have no experience in Kubernetes. Would it be possible to switch from a regular non-docker, non-anythin Mastodon setup to Kubernetes? Or, is it possible to create some sort of clustered setup without Kubernetes?

@rolle My instance is running since October 2022:1. 12 total/8 active2. Ryzen 5 4500/32GB/1TB SSD (2 months ago it was Celeron core2duo/8GB/240GB HDD)3. My cellar with 100/100 fiber4. Internal SSD with daily backup to NAS with HDD5. about €7,50 for electricity and about the same for write-down.6. about 2.5GB DB and 37GB media storage7. 4.0.28. invite only9. very smoothly since I migrated to my new hardware and dockerised and limited the instance. It can use about 50% of the system.

@rolle i have 3 active users on a managed masto.host instance intended for friends and mutuals. i pay $9 per month for the masto.host "planet" subscription plus $5 per month for elasticsearch. i have capacity for approximately 20 users at the moment but i'm ready to scale up to 100 (the next subscription level, $19 per month) if needed at some point. my instance is version 4.1.2 and runs quite smoothly

It scales based on power usage but since it’s an old laptop the power draw is usually minimal6. Around 8gb combined, though I have had it at upwards 20gb7. 4.1.28. Closed9. It does run smoothly, probably won’t need to change it out until the server dies
