It's beginning to sound to me as if the US security clearance process has completely lost the plot: it focuses on whether your history can be verified and whether you can be blackmailed, not on whether you're a security risk. Lying/blackmail merely indicate vulnerability to foreign agents: wanting to overturn the state/being a Putinist totalitarian make you an actual one but are apparently not screened for these days ...https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/liz-cheney-says-greene-lose-security-clearance-defending-suspect-penta-rcna79734

@cstross UK security clearance is effectively a combination of did you pay your rent on time; and have you ever suggested the Royal Family aren’t good value for money. The old Soviet method of actually making everyone watch each other, seems more effective than most of our new security firms making you complete a form.

@blacktraffic @cstross Yeah that is a good comparison; although if the questions were asking about undermining democracy; then based on the British Intelligence services; the better you are at undermining democracy the more likely you are to get the job?

@prettyhatmech @blacktraffic TBF the entire purpose of the British and US foreign services over the past century has mostly been about undermining democracy (former colonies' democracies, that is).

@prettyhatmech @cstross cue:A tourist is wandering down Whitehall looking lost. He spots a policeman.“Can you tell me which side the Foreign Office is on please?”The policeman furrows his brows.“Ours, I think?”
