https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/12lqiy1/what_are_the_downsides_to_using_fedora_silverblue/IMO a v interesting & informative chat. It allies with my own atm still unsophisticated impressions of #immutable vs regular 🐧 Cons. I liked its chats specifically about user management difficulties of "long-term" #containers, & a personal opinion that on that issue #oS #MicroOS seems better than #Fedora #Silverblue / #Kinoite. I finished the thread feeling confirmed in my view for ME, that regular remains best, but if an immutable "has" to be had, MicroOS, b4 the hats.

@dropbear42 I've recently jumped on the Immutable 🚄 and have been using it on both my desktop and laptop with my server (just my old desktop) staying on "regular" :fedora:

@justinz Well well! Isn't that quite the change, since our last chats on such topic! 😮 Happy with #Kinoite so far?

@dropbear42 Yeah I figured I'd give it a go, if it turns out to be not right for me a reinstall is not something I am afraid of.So far I'm really happy with it. It definitely has its drawbacks (for me) as I work a lot in a konsole and command line tools either have to be layered into the image, which isn't too hard or used in a toolbox which also works fairly well from my testing so far. It's just a little different from being able to easily dnf install them.

@dropbear42 All the software I use outside the base image I've found as flatpaks which is great. I'm also feeling encouraged to flatpak more applications to improve the experience of flatpak and immutable OS users at the same time.Other than that, it's been very much the same experience as I always had on "regular" Fedora KDE.

@justinz >have to be layered into the image, which isn't too hardNo not hard per se, but each instance of doing this chips away at the "immutable" premise, if ever a future "bad thing" were to occur...?>used in a toolboxYes, but per my link, & earlier chats here with others, over time the personal management burden on one's various tb/containers might become burdensome, re keeping them all updated along with the core OS...?

@dropbear42 It's certainly got some rough edges but what new technology/idea doesn't in its early days? There are plenty of ways to work around what I need. I could just use my server as a bounce box for all my command line tools as they are all network tools for my job and I'm on the same network 99.9% of the time. I'm pretty happy with the way I have it setup now but that could change in the future.

@justinz >encouraged to flatpak more applicationsIf you mean "for you", instead of layering many rpms on your pooters, then yeah ok fine. Otoh, given your position/role, if you mean FP more apps globally into Flathub, that'd be simply fabulous for everyone!

@dropbear42 I've always preferred flatpak over snap and appimage so it's not a big change for me. I've always tinkered with flatpaks but preferred OS packages e.g. rpm, apk, deb, etc. Though I am coming to really like the separation of OS and Applications that kinoite/silverblue encourages.

@justinz OK. Presumably you've also now installed Flatseal? Are you much of a desktop themer, & if so, are your FP apps "behaving"?I bet you never expected the Spanish Inquisition.

@dropbear42 nah I haven't used flatseal, though I know of it, KDE has a KCM for managing flatpak permissions as well 😉 I do not theme my desktop at all, I'm either using Breeze or Breeze Dark, Breeze Cursor. I tweak some KDE settings but it's mostly default. The only things I change are the Fedora logo that's used for the kicker icon back to Plasma and the wallpaper to whatever is my favourite Plasma one at the time. I haven't noticed any difference in theming while using flatpaks.
