21-year-old suspect in leak case apparently had wide access to intelligence data. He reportedly was a tech working on comm and computer systems for the 102nd Intel Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base. He had wide access via the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System.

@lauren I wounder if he'll also get the same treatment as Chelsea #Manning since he'd actually endanger #NatSec and troops in the field.

@lauren I literally know almost nothing about what access such a tech should have. Do they need to have (or should they have had) TS clearance?

@clankgy1 I would assume TS at a minimum. I'm speculating in terms of this particular case, of course.

@lauren I would assume so also. If so, the clearance process for this individual should be reviewed as it seems even a cursory glance at their background shows somebody that shouldn't have been cleared. I'm also confused as to why a National Guard Base would have access to a SCIF or TS docs at all.

@clankgy1 The Air National Guard is a direct part of the Air Force with wide responsibilities.

@clankgy1 You think they're going to use a high level person to do the grunt work in those situations? Nope. That's where the youngsters come in. And it's easier to clear them, since they've lived such a short time their histories are easy to research and usually very simple.

@lauren Makes sense, but I am still trying to wrap my head around the document access process. When I worked at a research institute, TS stuff and above could only be accessed in a SCIF. Maybe (likely) I just don't understand security procedures, but it seems very sloppy.

@lauren ahh and the lesson here is that tech people are not to be trusted
