@stux I... what??? Is it that the PC’s are so old they can’t upgrade, or...?

@eightfoldpath I think it's a matter of not knowing or being able toPerhaps software doesn't work on new OSes or people are scared

@stux@mstdn.social If its not broken why fix it. A lot of financials have obscure software that runs on specific versions of windows ect. Its quite normal to be honest, as long as those computers are isolated from the external networks its not an issue.

@stux It's wild how true that statement is. So many companies don't want to put in the time to migrate to a new system.

@stux Well, I'm still running it on one ancient (though completely overhauled) machine because of a cornucopia of very useful utilities that I have on it. But that machine NEVER goes online, of course.

@stux Perhaps they have a solution that is working for them and don't have the budget to upgrade all the systems it integrates with.

@stux Yeah it’s frustrating as can’t get the hardware easily now to run XP. It’s not a safety issue as in many cases these systems aren’t connected to the outside world. I’ve discussed virtual environments to run XP on modern machinery but that’s a whole other issue.

@stux @eightfoldpath That's typically why. There's many cases where it's just not feasible to upgrade or migrate to different software that's critical for daily functions. Typically, these systems would be put on their own segregated network that doesn't have internet access to minimize the risk.

@SophiaFree It's not as much about being hip as about being safe :ablobwink: A door lock is a door lock but software is being updated constantly with a good reason

@stux @eightfoldpath In some cases it's industrial or lab equipment, or something like a security or HVAC system that was sold as a software/hardware solution back in the day with proprietary software for XP or 98, or even DOS. The company no longer supports it (or doesn't exist), and to avoid replacing the whole thing they're stuck on that platform.

@stux Even door locks are less safe, the more people have used them. At least where I live. I know, that people can copy their keys to their flats. Than they move to another place. Than the next person could let someone copy that key to the door and so on. Hypothetically, everyone, who lived at my place before me, could have a copy of my key and they could have given that copy to someone else. I have my extra safety methods, but most people ignore it.
