@Ricardus I listened to CJRT out of Toronto a lot growing up, and once in a while I caught a show he did called My Kind of Jazz. I didn't realize that was him.

Gotta do some shopping tonight, could use some more cat food, and he's due for a new feather or similar feline enrichment device. We have several kicking around, but it's nice to get a new one now and then. In a couple days I'm going to come home smelling like several very large dogs (ie, not the canines I usually post here around weekends). He's forgiven me for that in the past, although there will be much sniffing.

@djsundog I wonder if the fedi is going to result in a new wave of sysadmins? Among those who stick it out for the long haul, I feel like there's going to be a bunch of younger people/people early in their careers who decide to try running their own instances. Kind of like how some people got into it running their own game servers.

Up late dealing with another pile of leaves. The weather is going to get wet in the next couple days, and I wanted to get ahead of it. This isn't all of them, but it is most of it.

We need more Mastodon instances in the cloud. What I mean by this is that the instances should be hosted on moderately-powerful small form factor machines, suspended beneath a hot air balloon envelope. That way, as more and more people join, the server heats the air and causes the balloons to rise up into the clouds.

@adam Depending on who exactly left or was laid off, I would think Twitter's infrastructure would more or less keep going until something went wrong. It could be that there's enough people to just keep it from actually going dark, but it'll be interesting to see how long it goes.

I managed to get a recording of howling today. These two (none of the wolves pictured in the post I'm replying to) have been together in their enclosure since the fall, and they're doing pretty well. Shortly before we opened a howl got started, and the two of them joined in.#wolves #howling

@stux @eightfoldpath In some cases it's industrial or lab equipment, or something like a security or HVAC system that was sold as a software/hardware solution back in the day with proprietary software for XP or 98, or even DOS. The company no longer supports it (or doesn't exist), and to avoid replacing the whole thing they're stuck on that platform.

@rysiek @inkscape I feel like one of the big challenges with #FLOSS tools for things like image editing is that initially, FLOSS flourished where the users were more inclined to manipulate the tools themselves, and to do things like submit patches, take on more development roles, or even just read the code to try to understand it. It was a hit then for things like the Apache web server, and other GNU system tools - the users were closer to the code, so to speak, and would dabble in it to some extent. On the other hand, people using things like image editors are more thinking of creating whatever it is they're trying to create, as opposed to maintaining an infrastructure. Someone just editing a photo isn't necessarily thinking about the inner workings of their OS (to the extent someone hacking on a web server might be). So, there's more of a gap between the people who would be using that and the people who would be writing those tools. I like the way #Blender had open movie projects, where the developers would work alongside artists to produce an actual creative work. I think more of that kind of thing would benefit the likes of #Krita and the #GIMP, and other projects.

Those of you using #Linux on the desktop... What are your thoughts on AMD vs Intel for a processor with integrated #graphics? I'm looking to update a PC I use for music production. It's got an old Core 2 Quad processor and motherboard, with an old Nvidia card. It works, but only supports 8 GB of RAM, and I have 6 in now.Graphics performance would be nice, but I probably won't be doing anything too graphics intensive (eg, Blender) on this computer. I'm more concerned with stability. In the past I've had good luck with Intel, and a little bit of flakiness with AMD, but I'm curious to hear from others.
