       If 20c cultural theory had actually succeeded in weaning us off the fantasy that culture is created & possessed by individuals, we would have so much less anxiety about #AI right now -- and in its place an intuitive recognition that the boundaries of our (collective) world are expanding.

       @moultano @TedUnderwood I'm also struggling to understand what "culture isn't created by individuals mean." If you mean the zeitgeist is a creation of groups of people who are shaped by culture even as they themselves shape it, I suppose that's true but I'm not sure what it has to do with AI On the other hand, when I'm sitting down to write a script, sure feels to me like I'm an individual creating something.

       @paulmather007 @moultano And I think we’ll still have that feeling 20 years from now. All that will change is we may use tools that make our relation to genre templates and influential models a little more explicit. But journalists are going to sell that to us as John Henry vs the Mighty Steam Drill.

       @TedUnderwood @moultano The cultural theory goes a little over my head but if you're saying artists will collaborate with tools that will help shape the product that makes sense. If we're sharing authorship with tools I'm less happy about that! IMHO 1) many journalists don't understand AI chatbots 2) many tech industry people are incentivized to overstate the future of AI chatbots. So I'm approaching both sources of information with a grain of salt.
