On #Mastodon, unlike #twitter, favoriting a post w/o boosting it does absolutely nothing. It's basically saying to the person whose post you favorited: "I like you, but not enough to tell other people I like you because you reflect poorly on me as I want others to perceive me."I mention it b/c I'm not sure enough people understand the difference between the platforms yet.

@LeftistLawyer it doesn't do "nothing". It lets the person know you read their post and liked it. Not all posts need to be boosted. Like, I'm not going to boost a post about someone celebrating X number years sober, but I sure as hell do want to let that person know they and their accomplishments are seen. I'll favorite a meme but I won't always boost it if that person already has way more followers than I do and the overlap is significant.

So. It turns out, the people that just like to fave, really really like to fave and have been pretty rude in their opinions on the subject. None followers … just rando pot shot folks. I’ve blocked three because I don’t need those types hanging around. It is ok to agree to disagree with an opinion on here w/o being a dick. That just impresses me as total slimy #twitter style and I don’t do slimy twitter style.

@CorvidCrone Yeah, I get that. Which is why only use it, alone, when in a running dialogue on here. To let people know I saw it. But if I genuinely like a post on here, I'll never just fav w/o boosting.

@LeftistLawyer @CorvidCrone I think Mastadon has a ways to go on this issue. Everyone who boosts causes me to see an item again in my feed … which gets kind of redundant. I remember when Twitter users created the retweet before it was even a feature, so I get it, but …

@marlowe @CorvidCrone I dunno, I think I'm ok with that. But, I'm not 24/7. more like multiple drive by's per day. W/o an algorithm, think drop pretty fast on the timeline and tons of people miss really good content if it's not boosted constantly.

@LeftistLawyer @marlowe @CorvidCrone I've had several interesting conversations about people boosting their own posts. I have zero problems with that. A lot of the big accounts on Twitter did it, and it is even more important here. Posting in the morning and then boosting in the late afternoon or early evening just makes sense to me.
