I feel like a reasonable extension of the Al Capone theory of harassment (someone who feels entitled to engage in sexual harassment is probably also doing other bad things: https://hypatia.ca/2017/07/18/the-al-capone-theory-of-sexual-harassment/) is that anyone who just drops weirdly sexist statements into their technical presentations should have all their other assertions analysed extremely carefully because they're probably also bullshit

@mjg59 you do realise that technical content is either true or false, and “weirdly sexist” changes every 6 months right?

@mjg59 I guess I have been thinking of it in terms of sampling stats; if some assholeish behaviour comes to light from a small number of samples, you can bet there’s probably a whole ocean of assholery as an underlying distribution.

@Sophistifunk @mjg59 Funnily, both statements are false which makes it a good illustration for the top post.

@mjg59 Bad character (which embraces lack of morality & ethics) is never relegated to one distinct topic in the human brain. "I will be horrifically immoral when it comes to THIS thing and perfectly moral, observing ethical boundaries, when it comes to everything else" ... is not a thing.

@mjg59 This is brilliant and spot-on. I worked in HR, my experience supports this correlation. Men or persons who serially engage in one form of unscathed power-dynamic violation of company policy are likely to assume they can do it in other areas, similarly unscathed. Often this additionally includes taking credit/promotion for things they are incompetent in, putting the company success at risk. Also falsifying reimbursement requests and time documents. They are interconnected.

@mjg59 if nothing else it signals they're either incapable of reading the room, or they accurately read the room and it's not a place you want to be.

@mjg59 Is this "AI Capone" a gangster version of ChatGPT?
