In general, do you like ⭐ or ❀️ more? Since making it possible to have hearts on my instance, it's hard to switch back to stars even though I made both look beautiful. I'm constantly switching them back and forth in my personal instance.Stars are default in the #MastodonBirdUI btw.

@Andres Thankfully I've not been on Facebook for years.I hated that they switched the star to heart on Twitter back in the days. I was the one who was a strong supporter of stars. There were even extensions for changing it back: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/twitter-stars/nbaegdkhokgebjcjjpjliefppcaalcea/However, over the years I got used the heart... now I feel conflicted.

@rolle @Andres in light of what we were talking about on that other thread, then, why not pick a default, but then make it a setting in your client, so individual users can change it?

@TodePond I would be very scared if any instance over 100 users would enable it for all users :blob_sweat: One 10K+ instance already did it and I was in deep sh*t for a day spotting and fixing bugs before anyone noticed haha. Naturally that means it's kinda polished already because didn't get that much of bug reports, but anyway. I want to make it as perfect as possible for myself and then for others.Howver, other thing is, it's kinda opinionated UI and people should just deal with it. Not everyone prefer the bird site kind of look and I understand that very well. #MastodonBirdUI @supernovae

@GrahamDowns I don't have a client or app. It's just CSS/UI. And it can be changed. Not by a setting, but choosing the code: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui#micro-interactionsPlease also read: "Why don't you just create an app?" -> https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui#why-dont-you-just-create-an-app #MastodonBirdUI @Andres

@rolle Star, definitely. Heart signifies much stronger affection, whereas star is something that I can give to something I somehow support, but don't necessarily love.

@TodePond It could be possible to add a subdomain to nginx and just serve the original instance with the CSS file with sub_filter but that would mean a duplicate content in a different URL, not sure if it's recommended. Just added this to a FAQ: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui#why-dont-you-just-run-mastodon-bird-ui-in-a-separate-url@supernovae @elk

@rolle This is a cultural thing. Where Americans love this and that, in our country it means very deep affection still. Thus star would be more natural for us here, who are not about to marry a toot 😁

@rolle These are lovely animations! I definitely prefer ⭐ - not for aesthetic reasons, but because it has more room for people to use as they see fit. ❀️ has one fairly unambiguous meaning, whereas ⭐ is flexible enough to be used in different ways by different people. (It pained me when Twitter switched from star to heart: it no longer fitted my usage, at least some of the time. Sometimes I do mean "like" but sometimes it's "huh, interesting", or just marking something I might want to find again)

@rolle @Andres fair enough. I was going to suggest using local storage or even cookies, but then I read the article. It's not about not having server-side code; it's about wanting to keep it CSS and HTML only.In my case, I'm the opposite: my CSS and HTML kinda suck. As do my web dev skills in general. I'm not a web person. Give me a compiled, installed, locally running executable any day of the week. 😊

@GrahamDowns Hehe yeah, in my experience we front-end developers are in the minority. The ratio is like 3:1 back-end vs. front-end in our company. Styling is a whole different skillset and that's why there are usually no unicorns. I consider myself as a full stack developer since I am a sysadmin, front-end developer, kinda designer and everything in between, but I still realize back end is not my strongest suit and I can't lie about that. I have done integrations, even apps when I've been forced to, but it's not what I do and should focus on. Everyone has their skill sports and CSS is mine. @Andres

@laimis Thanks! The star is originally a work of a Twitter designer Brian Waddington but I have re-created it myself by hand from scratch. It contains 100 frames and each sparkle are carefully polished. My star is a bit different than the original, the sparkles stay on longer and are a bit longer in width, but I love it better that way. I didn't want it to be an exact copy so I could say it's my doing. #MastodonBirdUI

@rolle Make either as default and have the other as an option – for a user to set. And there could be also a Thumb as an option (but dont invest your time on such trivia for now). πŸ‘β A single STAR implies to something special and if several together- to a rating of sort.πŸ’› Heart implies to an affection - of course - or just positive feelings/emotions.
