Do we have any #electricbike or #electricbicycle experts in our midst? I have some questions about using my non-electric touring bike part-time as an electric bike.#cycling

@eliptic maybe not expert, but enthusiastic amateur who owns too many of the things. What're you interested in doing?

@marcel @carraway What I'm looking for is a way to electrify my bike but only for some trips. For example, if I am dreading the hills on a particular day I'd like to add a motor. And when I don't need the extra power I'd like to not be carrying extra weight. What do you think my best options are? Could I have a 'drop-in' wheel and a battery that I put in a pannier? Thanks for any advice you can offer!

@eliptic @carraway Are you much of a DIYer? i haven’t really seen a setup like that before. Personally, I would get a separate bike that’s an ebike.

@eliptic @marcel You can get retrofit kits to electrify a bike you have (usually by adding a hub motor, occasionally by adding a mid-drive motor assembly that replaces the whole crankset), or some bike shops specialize in doing it for you.You can't conveniently remove the motor, but the motor is only about 40% of the total added weight - the rest is the battery, and that can often be removed if you don't want it for a trip.A more practical option might be just to adjust the assist level - almost all ebikes I've experienced can turn the assist down to very low levels, so you if you're looking for a normal-feeling ride you could turn it down to a level that just offsets the weight of the hardware while still letting your legs do most of the work.

@eliptic I'm not an expert but have had an ebike for more than a decade. If you get a hub motor in a front wheel, it's fairly easy to swap in and out as needed

@eliptic I’m not an expert but I converted my midtail cargo bike (Kona Minute) to electric using a Swytch kit. What are your questions?
