@simon @erwinrossen @alvaro I tried using it to figure out how to implement a particular bit of functionality using a fairly obscure Python framework. It needs to indicate some kind of confidence level about each result; several answers were absolutely definitive sounding, plausible looking, and wrong.

@MikeTRose My FIOS has been rock solid reliable since installation 10+ years ago. I see no need for a backup - but then, I don't have a home security system nor do I run public servers at home.

He got an extraordinary amount of good done with the slightest congressional majority. You wanted him to fix SCOTUS? Gun laws? Reinstate Roe? No president can do that alone. We need to re-elect Biden with large congressional majorities in order to get things done.

@futurebird Correct. During COVID my synagogue’s zoom service *for toddlers* was zoom-bombed by Nazis. Had to password protect everything and issue passwords only to trusted people. Now the open livestreams are getting targeted by Nazis issuing bomb threats to the physical synagogue locations and watching the resulting chaos on screen. The result is that we’re going to have to restrict the livestreams as well. :(

@eniko In NYC they spent millions on air filtration systems, but the city officials are corrupt so they bought air purifiers of untested design from a well connected firm. Not HEPA certified. Noisy and expensive. @franktaber @eniko Not even remotely a possibility. Most NYC schools are old, heated by steam. There were still schools using anthracite coal boilers until 2001! Retrofitting all the schools for heat pumps would be a billion dollar initiative. Maybe more.

@publius @franktaber @eniko Expanding district steam system in any way seems unlikely. There’s a push to get buildings off district steam. I know hydronic is more efficient. There’s a retrofit project right now converting NYCHA apartments from boiler steam systems to cold weather electric heat pumps using Midea window units. I think something like this is the future for older building retrofits.

@publius @franktaber @eniko I recall reading a study that said it will be impossible for NYC to meet its carbon reduction targets with the district stream system. I suppose converting its heat source to nuclear would do it, but that seems unlikely to me. Not sure what the next best alternative is.

@publius @franktaber @eniko The window heat pumps trialed by NYCHA are cold climate heat pumps, so may need less supplemental heat, but less isn’t zero. And I think the city is betting on the Montreal hydro power connection to provide a lot of clean electricity. But I think it can only provide enough to make up for the loss of Indian Point nuclear. Good thing we’ve got a forward looking, competent mayor to solve these problems /s

@MikeTRose Happened to us in Israel. We boarded a sherut at TLV and gave the driver the Jerusalem address of our apartment- in a working class area below San Simon. Driver starts laughing and calls over his friend, you’re not going to believe where these American tourists are staying- it’s on my street!
