@lightweight Under law, IRD data must be held domestically, i.e. within NZ. Another issue is Te Ao Maori data - cultural data will be taonga, so needs to be held domestically as well.

@christopherd> I was going to suggest collab on a google docThe vast majority of collaborative editing is drafting text, so don't look past the usefulness of that old online whiteboard Etherpad. Just make sure you take a copy when you're done ;) A wiki can be pretty useful for online text editing too, for slower collaborations where you're not all trying to edit as once. I keep meaning to test out Federated Wiki for this:http://fed.wiki.org/@lightweight

@lightweight Can anyone explain why we don’t have a secure government owned and run cloud server for all NZ’s sensitive data? Anyone remember the Whanganui computer?

@jeremy_pm> Can anyone explain why we don’t have a secure government owned and run cloud server for all NZ’s sensitive data?Turns out we do. They kept this very quiet until announcing it just recently:https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/487346/government-reveals-high-security-data-centre-being-built-in-west-auckland> Anyone remember the Whanganui computer?“We have maintained a silence closely resembling stupidity.”RIP Neil Roberts@lightweight

@lightweight Once upon a time I had that fire. Even had an article published about LibreOffice. Now it’s more *deep sigh*. FOSS alone isn’t sufficient. How’s Brazil going with government FOSS, by the way? Any idea about current progress on the many other government projects that were started with high hopes and seemed to struggle with uptake?https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adoption_of_free_and_open-source_software_by_public_institutions

@alix no, #FOSS alone is definitely not sufficient. A lot of visionary leadership is also required, because people have to organise to allow the necessary permissionless innovation :) And yeah, gov'ts need to recognise the existence of digital infrastructure and start funding its maintenance & development. There're many ways #FOSS is inherently superior to proprietary software and can do crucial things that 'the market' will never deliver.

@lightweight> FOSS... can do crucial things that 'the market' will never deliverAt the risk of splitting hairs, Free Code can't help anyone if it's not deployed (and maintained), and vendors doing that are also part of the market. The problem here - as in so many areas - is the lack of regulation to make sure the market isn't tilted towards an oligopoly of giant vendors, and the lack of awareness among decision-makers that not all relevant information is reflected in pricing.(1/2)@alix

To be more specific, vendors who voluntarily address ethical issues like privacy protection, defence of digital sovereignty, integration of cultural safety, use of open standards, and so on, internalize the costs of this and it's reflected in their prices. The big vendors are allowed to externalize huge swathes of the true cost of not doing so onto the public, their workers, the environment, etc, allowing them to offer prices that are misleadingly low.(2/2)@lightweight @alix

@strypey @jeremy_pm @lightweight Nah. That datacentre is primarily being built for the SIS and their mates. Departmental data will still be held largely in private data centres... Microsoft, Amazon, etc. This quote from Andrew Little: "Government agencies would continue to use privately-owned data centres to store the bulk of their information".https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/131661727/government-has-been-secretly-building-a-300m-data-centre-at-an-auckland-air-force-base

@strypey @christopherd we've got an NZOSS NextCloud instance with integrated OnlyOffice (and Collabora Office, although the former is better at present) which provides GoogleDoc-comparable collaborative editing capabilities. You're both welcome to have accounts and have a go with it.

Thanks @lightweight. I did set up an account some time ago, but TBH I've yet to come across a situation where I needed it. @christopherd
