I've been VERY active on the social media services I love the most, that means #Twitter and now #Mastodon. Only thing I keep wondering is how the "quitting" big social medias will affect to my business. I know it's not all about me, but every entrepreneur knows you should be where your customers are. I'm selling websites so I should be there where the potential buyers are. I shouldn't be thinking this way, but it's kinda how I make a living. Most of our sales come from recommendations, social media is only a small portion of it. But every now and then I hear from the current customer of ours "we originally heard from you on Twitter". Now that I'm not there, I wonder will I hear that from the new customers in the future. My dream would be of course "I heard you from Mastodon" but it will most probably go "We liked your previous work".On the other hand I never was on Twitter to sell websites. I used it 90% for fun and the rest for telling what I do for a living. It was fun to see celebrities and "big shots" talk to me like they are a regular persons though. It was fun to naturally get increase in sales while just being yourself. On here that won't yet happen as #Fediverse is a very anti-business, anti-commercial place. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the good will follow.

@rolle Look at it the other way around: if Twitter was a major driver for customers to your business, then your business would depend on Twitter. Even in good times, it would be a good idea to diversify away from that.

@raccoon It wasn't a major driver for customers, but notable. Our business does not depend on Twitter.

@rolle I am very much in a similar situation. Although I promoted my courses on Twitter, that was never my primary purpose there. Being "solo", I mostly enjoyed Twitter for posting trivial dumb brain-farts about bikes, dogs, sometimes code, and whatever else happened to be on my mind.As for business, it's definitely down, but it's hard to say if it's due to Twitter or due to layoffs generally. Probably more the latter. I dunno.

@rolle I find the reach on Mastodon is much better, so it seems likely more people could know about you and what you do on here. If you share writing on here, more people will discover and share it here. Hopefully that translates to more people deciding to hire you.

@rolleIf you're a business owner, you need to keep aware and stay on wherever the people are. And that does mean using the for-profit social media for *your* benefit. Now, mastodon is weird. It is highly anti-commercial. However people talking about stuff (goods, services) isn't exactly frowned on either. But the more you move into advertisement, the faster you're blocked.

@rolle It would help if businesses and other organizations could get their own instances hosted and administrated as a commercial service.

@rolle It's a valid concern. As you're designing websites, there's little point to dropping flyers in your neighbours' letterboxes. People want to see it on the internet.I wouldn't worry too much about the anti-commercialism of the Fediverse, though. It's mostly anti-spam.Your page is a great mix of posts and boosts on a range of topics, not just trying for sales. I hope your business flourishes here.
