Did you know Tesla has cameras both on the outside of vehicles and the inside, and everything is uploaded to Tesla? Anyhoo they’ve been exporting the videos, making memes of customers and then posting them on chat rooms. https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-workers-shared-sensitive-images-recorded-by-customer-cars-2023-04-06/

> and everything is uploaded to Tesla? This is patently false. Tesla cannot afford to pay AT&T for all that bandwidth. All video does not get recorded, only certain types of flagged events usually when the computer thinks it was a safety related thing. And if you get into a crash the video definitely gets uploaded

@tony @GossiTheDog Not to say you're suggesting otherwise, but even if it's not feasible for them to upload all of the data all of the time, the fact that they can upload *any* data at *any* time should be deeply concerning. What's more, the fact that people would continue to buy a panopticon out of convenience is some bizarre amalgam of 1984 and Brave New World (and given Musk's stance on free speech, let's also sprinkle in some Fahrenheit 451 for the trifecta).

@tony @GossiTheDog What makes this even more egregious is that as suspect as devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home Assistant are, there have been pretty in-depth analyses about how and when these devices phone home to determine what they do and do not listen to and under what circumstances.Fortunately, what all of those tests have concluded is that those devices are always-on when listening for the trigger phrase, but will only access the internet for queries immediately after that phrase.

@jargoggles It's interesting that nearly everyone opts in (although in part because of the big dialog that makes it sound like you're missing out if you don't) - same with google, alexa, etc. it seems most people are quite happy to have their data uploaded. Somehow we trust corporations which seems a bad idea to me..@GossiTheDog

@jargogglesOf course the other thing that is GDPR relevant is people who pass your car close enough to trigger sentry never opted in.. The car flashes the headlights to say it's recording (how many people would make the connection?) but if that got uploaded it's problematic.Similar problems with cameras, smart doorbells, etc. I think companies are just relying on the 'no right to privacy in public' rules and one day that's going to get tested in court.@GossiTheDog

@tony @GossiTheDog "Similar problems with cameras, smart doorbells, etc."I had to put in a doorbell camera because my packages kept being stolen. It would be one thing if these were luxuries, but we lost cat food and groceries. These were deliveries we were really depending on.We were fortunate enough to be able to go out and replace these things as needed, but that's not universally the case for us or anyone.Of course, the big problem is that these cameras feed to big corporations.

@f4grx @trisweb @GossiTheDog this can't be on by default everywhere, many countries prohibit taking pictures of people in public without consent? But then again, it's tesla... and musk, so if some kind of shitty scheme is possible, it's certainly happening.

@konstantin @trisweb @GossiTheDog Video acquisition is permanently enabled, the inside screen is always decoding the surroundings.I dont think they care about people consent.I believe it's not sending live video to tesla hq *all the time* but the cameras are probably buffering the last N minutes/hours, and "interesting" sequences are possibly sent, who knows? Are the cars connected to wifi when they are parked?

@GossiTheDog on top of the internal sharing among Tesla employees, this article also states that having a Tesla seems to allow you to park a camera everywhere you want to spy other people, and retrieve the data afterwards for yourself... What a mess...Tesla is not yet well implanted here, so that I've never thought about this use case 😅

@spodlife @GossiTheDog Indeed, I just checked in France and it seems that recording on public area is even not allowed by default. Here is an article from @CNIL : https://www.cnil.fr/fr/la-videosurveillance-videoprotection-sur-la-voie-publiqueOn top of this, if the records are actually uploaded to Tesla's servers, and if these are outside of Europe, it may be inconsistent with #GPDR

@Reeter @spodlife @GossiTheDog same in England for private citizens. (Obviously it has to exclude traffic cameras and cctv to monitor busy areas where there can be trouble but they are police monitored.) Doorbell cameras can't record identifying parts of a street such as car registration numbers and if they have cctv at a house any windows, doors and access of others visible have to be blanked out.

@GossiTheDog as someone who owns a Tesla, I can say this report is not factually correct:- there is no inner camera recording on Sentry unless there is a physical break in.- there is no recording of inner camera while driving.- it's a opt in to share old video data, which only occurs at home over wifi and when parked, thus video around the car while driving.- 9 ex employees who worked there before Tesla enabled inner cameras for break-in https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/5/18296501/tesla-internal-camera-rear-view-mirror-autonomous-ridesharing-service-driverless. The inner camera view when parked and sentry is engaged is only visible to the owner via mobile app or physically turning it on screen with a preview of it on screen.Tesla is not Elon, nor I think he should be the CEO. But there is this big push from media to push out junk for clickbait. I get it, it pays them bills. But seriously, question what you read.

@GossiTheDog The final lines of that article sum it all up."One of the perks of working for Tesla as a data labeler in San Mateo was the chance to win a prize – use of a company car for a day or two, according to two former employees. But some of the lucky winners became paranoid when driving the electric cars.“Knowing how much data those vehicles are capable of collecting definitely made folks nervous," one ex-employee said."

@roboneko @GossiTheDog @Harryshelper @spodlife video monitoring by a State is indeed also an issue, that can be dealt with using the vote right (and indeed a few riots if you are french, as a tradition)But video monitoring by a sole citizen is also really problematic: any stalker could use these devices to spy on someone else and use it for whatever he thinks is right. That scares me as much as State surveillance
