Today I scanned all 864 pages of a single issue. 864 pages. Single issue. Here are some cleaned up scans. I'm now going to take what I learned and come up with a process for dealing with these things, and with 214 to go, I better make a process that doesn't kill me.

@textfiles Could it be somehow automated, e.g. way google did this?Fragile ones are hard though. What kind of binding on the left side has it got? Or is it just folded "one in another"?

@textfiles I was going to say get one of those scanners they use for the books, but newspaper sized, and then I got incredibly sad.I applied for a digitizing gig when archive.org was hiring in Toronto at Robert's Library (aka Fort Book, worth looking up).Anyway, it's an interesting problem to try and simplify, and the gears are already turning. Thank you for the new temporary obsession.

You are all giving me suggestions and you need not do that. I'm doing things with a proven process and the goal is to extract the maximum information, and even more importantly, let someone after me re-start the process almost from scratch without dealing with any "clever" choices from me.Just enjoy the tech history mess I'm going to unleash, roughly 120,000 pages of Computer Shopper.

@textfiles Thats crazy and wonderful. It's funny what becomes interesting, later...I suggest that possibly you and maybe a few others at archive probably know more about scanning documents than just about anyone.

@textfiles Seeing these hard drive prices reminds me that someone sent me a 1TB flash drive a few weeks ago _for free_. I asked if they wanted it back when I was done with it and nah, it wasn’t worth the price of return shipping.

@textfiles @mmasnick OMG! I remember this software being advertised everywhere as ‘real AI’, but it was apparently a really basic Eliza-like thing. 🤣Now I’m imagining it being redone with a local chatbot LLM heavily tuned to relationship and smexytime conversations, and a tuned Stable Diffusion with a strongly trained hypernet that generates pictures of a single person as you (or the LLM!) request. All delivered on a 64GB USB-C thumb drive. 😵Anyway, glad I could contribute to this history! 👍🏼
