Last week, I preordered books from two of my favorite authors.I'm absolutely going to buy these books, and preordering helps the authors more than buying the book later. Preorders make bookstores and publishers look up and say "Wow, people really want this book!" which can lead to more copies being stocked and more marketing oomph. If you want to help an author, especially if you know you'll buy the book anyway, preorder that upcoming book!#Bookstodon #AmReading #BookMarketing 📚

Preordering a book is like buying yourself a present, especially if you're forgetful. Then it's a wonderful ✨surprise✨ present when it arrives!

@grammargirl I preordered @KellyLink's new collection White Cat, Black Dog way back in (checks notes) August 2022 and it showed up upon its release the other day. I'm loving the stories. There''s no one else who writes like Kelly Link.

@grammargirl Can I ask you this question, wasn’t “preordering” all the time before you ordered the book? I’ve never understood things like that and preheat the oven. I’m not preheating the oven, I’m heating it. You ordered the book, even though it’s not for sale. Just one of my grammar pet peeves that I thought you might be able to answer. Thanks.

@grammargirl But you didn't name the books to help boost the authors and maybe get them another sale or two 😀

@grammargirl Agree. But I order so few physical books these days; it's an even rarer treat! In a few weeks, I'll get @badastro 's latest title that I ordered way back in the before times of October 2022.Then I'll probably have to drive to his house to get him to sign it. 😄

@grammargirl The thing is: I am properly forgetful, so it happened a handful of times that I ended up with two copies of the same book: one ordered when it was in the shop and the other preordered so long before it came out that I had forgotten about preordering it.So, I stopped preordering too far ahead.

@Jantar Haha! I never thought of that problem. Yes, it sounds like you are doing the right thing waiting until close to the publication date. :)

@grammargirl Sadly, the rest of the entertainment industry taught many of us to never pre-order anything. I can only imagine the impact that's had on book sales.I quite love when my daughter gets all excited to preorder the next books from her favorite authors. I'm glad she still has that excitement.

@grammargirl My sis-in-law orders so much of all kinds of stuff from Amazon, she has often told of similar surprise feelings!

@grammargirl I preordered a book that doesn't release until November. That means around Christmas time I'm going to be extremely surprised and happy!

@grammargirl Yes! I've gifted my future self many pleasant surprises from pre-ordered books.
