🍄 Missed your jump over the mushroom? đŸ”« Splatted next to your target? 🚧 Drifted your kart outside the track? This shall happen no more! We contacted Nintendo to address the recurring problem with defective Switch controllers and they agreed to offer all consumers the right to repair, free of charge, even beyond the legal guarantee! This will prevent the disposal of unrepaired controllers and unnecessary waste.

@developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo Honestly the #EU over-regulates everything. They had no business mandating the #USBC port on smartphones, for example, and I wish that #Apple had stood up to them on that front. If #Nintendo did this voluntarily, good on them. If they did this under duress, it's yet another in a long list of shameful abuses of power by the #EU.

@realcaseyrollins @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo Why should there not be any pressure on them? What makes the freedom of a profit maximizing legal construct to do what it wants important? If the government protects their right to profit in the market (through IP and copyright protection), then I don't see why it doesn't create limits on behavior either.

@nix @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo Ah interesting take...I always viewed it from a consumer perspective, as it leads to low-grade (but still effectual) price-gouging for repairs, as well as limiting the rights the customers have over the products that they own. So I support right to repair on moral grounds, same as I oppose #DRM. I'm just not sure if this calls for a public sector solution though.

@bot @Barredo @developerjustin @EU_Commission @nix Just like with right to repair, and getting rid of #DRM, yes it would be *nice* to have a worldwide cable standard. But it's preposterous to think that it's the government's job to tell us what *checks notes* cable ports our phones should have. And besides one could argue that with the #Qi standard for wireless charging, all modern phones already have a common, cross-platform charging method.

@EU_Commission I really don't understand those complaining about this measure or enforcing USB-C. Interoperability is great for users, not for companies building their commercial strategy on top of a walled garden. The ones defending exclusive formats are just parroting the advertising garbage big companies brainwashed them with. Thanks to USB-C, we can hop from Apple to Android and back without adding extra waste. And we should be thankful for that.

@realcaseyrollins @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo Re: Public Sector. I think my take on these things is that governments create the space that allows business to exist (prosecuting anyone that interferes with their profit) so I do not mind if those same governments restrict the behavior of what they're creating, if it helps to maximize individual freedom.I'd rather there were no business, but if they legally exist I'd rather they followed strict rules.

@nix @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo I see; I do agree that some restrictions are necessary, but at the end of the day, government solutions tend to be worse than privatized solutions (except in certain situations), so I frankly want to have as small of a government as reasonably possible.

@realcaseyrollins @developerjustin @EU_Commission @BarredoIt depends on the incentive structure. I'm not convinced private groups have incentive to reduce waste or find ways to make repair accessible. In fact, some companies (like Apple) seem to go out of their way to make 3rd party repair more difficult.Private interests are good at innovating new solutions (which they sometimes push too zealously), and governments are good at slowing things down (unfortunately often the wrong things).

@nix @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo This is generally true. I think there are private solutions that would work, but companies don't try them because they're already making money and are afraid of fixing what ain't broke. But when it all too obviously makes sense, companies will address some of the issues you're mentioning here. For example, #Apple tries to get users to trade in their old phones for new ones, so they can harvest the working parts from the old phones to make the new ones, rather than making new parts from scratch and leaving perfectly working parts in old or broken phones to be tossed into landfill. There are also some rare cases where government policies *remove* incentives for ethical policy-making in a private level. For example, in the #USA, time-sensitive patents on drugs incentivize companies to price-gouge until the drug is approved as a generic.Example: #Viagra once cost $1.5k for 100 pills; since it's gone generic, the equivalent cost is now $66.67 for 100 pillshttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/price-of-viagra-has-risen-108-since-launch-100-pills-now-cost-1400/https://www.medpagetoday.com/special-reports/exclusives/93119A royalty system where the person who invented the drug gets royalties but allows anyone to make the drug (similar to copyright law) is probably more appropriate than the current laws we have in place here.

@realcaseyrollins @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo Definitely! Patents/copyright/trademarks are the regulations that create the monopolies. In general, as long as there's a government, I'm in favor of reducing/eliminating those and raising the pro-consumer restrictions.

@realcaseyrollins @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo The ideal alternative is neither business or governments, but interdependent social networks/cooperatives that only have incentive to make enough surplus resources/products to take care of each other. But society isn't in that place currently.

@nix @developerjustin @EU_Commission @Barredo I do think businesses and governments should exist; if I had my way, we'd probably live in a pseudo-libertarian state. But the government's primary role should be to instill justice and protect citizens from outside threats, which makes up for only a small portion of modern governments' duties unfortunately

@realcaseyrollins That would definitely be an improvement. I think that through gradually creating equity, teaching self-governance, and creating interdependent networks things like governments and businesses will be obsolete. But that only works if we improve *everyone*'s conditions enough to thrive and learn before then.

@realcaseyrollins Who else do you think would be able to help standardize?Companies have no incentive to do so as having their own cable increases profits and vendor lock-in, at least for the big players. So as long as we have capitalism diversion is inevitable I think.I agree it shouldn't be up to a goverment to chose the technology though. But then external standardization organizations also seem to have issues to work in the interest of the consumer or gain traction with companies. See W3C or ISO issues. Also Qi is horrible in terms of efficiency. We should not use it normally for energy conservation reasons.

@linc> Who else do you think would be able to help standardize?> Companies have no incentive to do so as having their own cable increases profits and vendor lock-in, at least for the big players.Companies stopped using proprietary charging cables for their smartphones for years...peripherals have been the last items to make the switch to #USB, but even still most peripherals use either #MicroUSB, #MiniUSB, or #USB. If you're right, that wouldn't have happened *before* the #EU's regulations.> Also Qi is horrible in terms of efficiency. We should not use it normally for energy conservation reasons.True...however, it works well enough for me. I've switched to using it largely for compatibility reasons; when hanging out with peeps who have #iPhone devices, I want them to be able to charge their phones if they leave their charger at home.

@EU_Commission this is actually super cool. I know it's not like this in the US, but even on the newer switch the issues still come up! It's awesome to see that the EU is taking steps like this, both for waste, and the consumer!

@EU_Commission Great! To be fair to Nintendo, they are great about repairing controllers for you. Got a few replaced for free. Nearly ashamed to return them at this point though with the beatings the kids give them!

@EU_Commission they better apply this to other places. Also, they should require no proof of purchase since I obtained my switch 2nd hand.

@realcaseyrollins agreed, the whole argument that “buyers have to keep buying new cables therefore we should regulate a single standard” isn’t accurate if you ask me. Many people already have multiple cables for their devices and don’t need to buy new ones every year. It seems that most who support this sort of over-regulation are those who aren’t as likely to buy Apple products in the first place. Also, making USB-C required only works until something better comes along, then all of a sudden the regulation is hindering adoption of newer, better technologies.

@EU_Commission Two switch controllers here waiting for Nintendo then. You might want to start with Sony already - two out of four PS5 controllers also suffer from joystick drift :)

@EU_Commission I'm in the US and I've sent back my family's Joy Cons at least 4 times and never get charged and they pay shipping both ways.
