I really wish Mastodon put some kind of a little marker next to a users name if you follow them or a different marker if you follow each other. Talking about on the Advanced Web View version on the web/PC, not on mobile. I hate having to click someone's name to find out if I'm following them or if they follow me. I'd be curious if someone like @rolle could do something with their CSS wizardry and provide code to make that a thing or not.#MakeMastodonBetter #BetterMastodon

@CliffWade @rolle Cliff, I keep moving back and forth between the default Mastodon UI and the Elk Client UI. The Elk Client UI provides a mouse-over feature to display follow status. In our case, it's "Mutual" - we follow each other. Elk is still in Alpha, but it works pretty well... 'even has markdown formatting. Elk talks to your Mastodon instance, so it requires plugin permission. You might want to give it a try.https://elk.zone @elk

@jay @rolle @elk Elk is really nice and I use it from time to time but two things that keep me from using it full-time is 1) It's not multi-column. I need multi-columns and I need/want them how I want to set them, not a fixed format and 2) It doesn't auto refresh the feed. You have to click a button every time and I can't for the life of me us a platform like that unfortunately. The rollover feature is nice, but I'd really like something visible at all times.

@CliffWade @jay @elk Elk is indeed nice and been even contributing to it, but it needs to mature and I really like the Mastodon "blip" sound that it doesn't have π Also the things Cliff mentioned prevent me from using it, although I don't use multi-column view I like auto refresh and Elk doesn't remember the position yet if going back and forth from threads back to main views.

@CliffWade I find myself missing this feature as well.Unfortunately this information is not available on the front end so it's not possible to achieve this CSS-only. I could look into it whether it's possible to add some kind of "following" class and add styles based on that, like :has(.following) .account__avatar::after and a checkbox icon for that or something. Thanks for the suggestion :thumbs_up_traditional:

@jay @CliffWade @elk I'm sure hover cards will come eventually, there's an open issue about it: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14918

@CliffWade @rolle This feature would be really useful. I donβt use the web interface much though. I wonder if @Gargron could implement in a future release. Or maybe @elk.

@rolle @CliffWade @elk I agree - Elk still has some quirks, which is why I still predominantly use the Mastodon instance's default client UI. However, I think it has potential. I notice it provides a better ability to follow users on other instances (instead of having to copy and paste the other account's URL). Perhaps, the default Mastodon UX can borrow some ideas from it. Now that you mention it, I think I've grown accustom to the default's "blip" sound too π

@rolle Ah, I was kind of afraid that it might not be available on the front end. But hopefully hovercards do get added and done so soon. I would love to see something like this from your side of things if possible. Just something subtle would work well I believe. Doesn't have to be fancy smancy.

@jay @rolle @elk I have a feeling with all these things showing up such as Elk and others, that the default Mastodon UI/UX will change quite drastically over the coming 12 months or so. What we have now is old and I think that's a known thing and I hope to see a bunch of folks get together and really make things much nicer.

@CliffWade I'm really keen on subtle things so if I were to try that you can count on it!
