Just out of curiosity, do people ever look at their "Local" timeline? Seems odd to really care about what "people on the same server as me" are talking about, relative to "people I follow." Instances are supposedly aligned on interests, but following hashtags already does a great job at that.

@shacker I almost never do it.I feel like most people are too multifaceted to make this feature make sense. Not only do I have a handful of rather different interests, as long as we share interests I also don’t really care if the people I interact with are on the same server or some other one. It’s largely irrelevant. The interaction experience is about the same regardless, after all.

@jeff I think the feature stems from the fact that you have to pick a server to get started, which sets up this idea that "these are your homies" or something. But really the people you care about following are scattered across a thousand instances, united by common interests, not be common server.

@xenotrope Maybe I should try paying more attention to Local. I never look at it!

@shacker I tend only to do it when people ask if anyone does it, so, maybe once a week. 😂

@shacker Frequently! I'm on a big general instance and the local feed is very cosmopolitan/quirky/eclectic. With DeepL I can read stuff from all over the place, and it's precisely because it isn't stuff I already know that makes it so great. Reminds me of the early days of the web when everything was interesting or fun, always something new to discover; and not drowning in a sea of dross.Like being in a pub with interesting people you've never met before!

@hitsuyonai I guess that's how I feel about Mastodon as a whole (that sense of being in a pub with interesting people). I only follow people I find interesting, or have common interests with - I don't see much of common interest in my Local feed, but tons of it from the people I follow.
