I told our bus line that our driver did an especially great job one day recently. They replied:“Thank you for your comments regarding the operator, that was challenging day to due to the Marathon held that day, there were plenty of detours. Glad to hear the operator did a good job on that day, operator will receive a commendation for an outstanding job.”Let people know when they’ve done a good job, too, OK?

@tek 100% this. It can literally save someone's ass at review time during a down economy too.

@tek Exactly. Praise is so powerful! At work, when a colleague has done something especially well, I usually write a thank-you mail to them, and cc their manager. It’s certainly appreciated.

@otto Could be. And he was the kind of driver you want them all to be like.

@slothrop We have a public praise channel. Thank you for reminding me to use it.

@tek Yeah, I doubt there's a lack of bus driver demand. I'm just thinking of a time back in the bad days of dotcom when a manager had to make a keep/layoff decision and the thing that flipped their decision was positive reviews from customers on support cases.

@tek I've learned to be very careful offering such praise: some businesses are so broken that ANY feedback about an employee is automatically registered as a complaint. When in doubt, it's best to seek out the employee's manager rather than corporate headquarters.

@pgcommunication That's a good point, and a real disk. And lots of organizations only have a complaint mechanism with no way to give kudos.
