Why do I spend every waking hour making stuff work on the archive especially software history? It's for the fans. Just for the fans

In case you have a fleeting curiosity as to what's going on here, ISO files range pretty widely and not every single system can handle them. So people find that their favorite utility doesn't quite show the files and they lose their minds.

@textfiles I'm hearing someone say, "I'd like to volunteer to help out so I can learn the intricacies of ISO formats as well as some empathy!"

@hananc I smell another blog entry that I will do with internet archive about how disk formats work.

@textfiles One might think they didn't have that much to lose.

@textfiles yes! Omg, I’ve had so many archivists complain that “search should be easier with born-digital files” uhm, no, quite the opposite — PDFs are easy. Searching .doc, .odt, .pdf, .rtf, .wpd, et al with one tool is much more complex (thank you elasticsearch).

@textfiles This is going to sound really mean towards that person but the only useless thing I see is that review. Not only is it a waste of words better spent on things that person does enjoy, but it also makes archivers feel awful. A friend of mine is an archiver and when I see what she has to deal with I feel really sorry for her. Plus, if it's that easy, he should spend the time on those iso files himself even if it's just to show he can do it better.

@textfiles@digipres.club And yes... I just loaded the ISO into a program I have around called ISOBuster (super-flexible CD-ROM analysis tool for Windows) and there's every file, right there, as expected.

@textfiles Never ceases to amaze, the sheer amount of energy people can devote to writing these things and sending them via email. I’d wager we could resolve many problems if their energy could be aimed at something more useful and productive.

@textfiles Especially those pesky Mac HFS ISO's. I always add a text file to my uploads which includes a disktype output.
