In #Emacs when I try M-x package-list-packages RET, it spins its wheels for a second, contacting elpa, and then I get the message Invalid version list ‘(8 6 -4)’ and I don't know why.(This is "GNU Emacs 26.3 (build 2, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.14) of 2020-03-26, modified by Debian" on Mint 20.1)

@docum3nt I do not like to be that guy, but Emacs 26.3 is old. I'm confident you won't have this problem with 28.x. Remember that you probably will have issues with the packages you install because developers rarely test their packages for old Emacs version. If you really want to use 26.x, run toggle-debug-on-error to get a stacktrace. This should get you started.

@galdor Understood, thanks, but for the moment I'm dependent on #Emacs not breaking for other, unrelated, reasons, and this is the version that comes in the Mint repos. I'll try as you suggested.
