Okay, #music post! Not sure how this one will go over exactly, but there's a brand new song, Raid, from a brand new band, called Bad Optix. But old school ska fans will recognize Bad Optix as being the reuniting of two of the key members of Operation Ivy, one of the most amazing ska punk bands of the late 80s. But this song is not ska punk... It's just ska. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5w5MbtykeA

@mmasnicksomeday every band will have a #funkwhale account. it will replace Bandcamp and Spotify and artist will retain (reclaim?) their independence (and get paid well) and we will still get a great experience.

(And if you like that Bad Optix song, and want more like that, then check out the solo album Tim Armstrong (one of the guys in Bad Optix, who was also the guy behind Rancid) did 15 years ago called "a poet's life" that had the Aggrolites as the backing band, and is one album I go back to listening to all the time}.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU8sDtage0U&list=PL2C50760C467901AA

@wjmaggos @mmasnick This is really dependent on bands/artists breaking free of restrictive deals with their labels, and being able to pay off significant debt incurred during their startup. It also requires a greater number of people being willing to support artists directly using donation systems and purchases, which we've trended away from for a long time.We have some thoughts about how we can offer a great experience for artists on FW, but the rest is cultural change. That's hard.

@cda @mmasnickmaybe it could start with artists who already release their music via #creativecommons. I imagine that community would really embrace #funkwhale with a few improvements. how can we help the project? I'm unclear on the vision. being able to buy music there like we do on Bandcamp would be huge. And SoundCloud has a much better royalty model than Spotify.https://help.soundcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260801306810-Fan-powered-Royalties-FAQs

@wjmaggos @mmasnick I've mentioned in another thread before that purchases are a really hard concept in a decentralized system, but pointing people to support platforms is something we want to work on. We've got some ideas around how artists could use Funkwhale as a platform, but nothing is concrete. As for how people can help, we're always happy to receive any contributions be they financial, user support, design, code, etc. Using the software and talking about it is also great.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick Some of the items we plan to work on this year are specifically focused around making the platform a more Fediverse-centric one for those who want to use that functionality, and I think a lot of the answers to the question of "how will this work for artists/podcasters?" will come from those design discussions.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick One really big thing that we have hanging around (but don't have scope to work on right now) is our sister project, Retribute. It's an open standard for sourcing donation sources for Fediverse users to create a weighted feed showing where your donations could go. It's languished a lot in recent years because we just don't have time to work on it, but I would dearly love to see someone take it on.https://retribute.me/
