Managed to get #FreeBSD and #KDE running on my laptop yesterday with some help from the FreeBSD IRC channel. Really helpful folks. Do recommend.

So it looks like Dell has completely removed the S3 sleep state from their machines. If you want your machine to sleep, tough.I wondered why it got *so hot* with the lid closed. Apparently even the Microsoft "Modern sleep" function is bunk, so it just sits there overheating forever.I guess we should just stop buying Dell machines altogether, then.

@wjmaggos @funkwhale This is a complex thing to achieve, as it brings money and access restriction into play in a federated system. The first thing we need to do is improve our music library handling to make playback and management of music on Funkwhale more pleasant. The next is to add support for donation services so users can support artists directly. This would make Funkwhale a more enticing platform for people to release music on.

Real programmers don't use Linux. Or *BSD for that matter. Real programmers have seen into the heart of computers and they know that there is nothing good to be found.Real programmers have run to the woods. They hide in fearful certainty, waiting with dread for what must come. That or macOS. Depends on the project.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick This is really dependent on bands/artists breaking free of restrictive deals with their labels, and being able to pay off significant debt incurred during their startup. It also requires a greater number of people being willing to support artists directly using donation systems and purchases, which we've trended away from for a long time.We have some thoughts about how we can offer a great experience for artists on FW, but the rest is cultural change. That's hard.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick I've mentioned in another thread before that purchases are a really hard concept in a decentralized system, but pointing people to support platforms is something we want to work on. We've got some ideas around how artists could use Funkwhale as a platform, but nothing is concrete. As for how people can help, we're always happy to receive any contributions be they financial, user support, design, code, etc. Using the software and talking about it is also great.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick Some of the items we plan to work on this year are specifically focused around making the platform a more Fediverse-centric one for those who want to use that functionality, and I think a lot of the answers to the question of "how will this work for artists/podcasters?" will come from those design discussions.

@wjmaggos @mmasnick One really big thing that we have hanging around (but don't have scope to work on right now) is our sister project, Retribute. It's an open standard for sourcing donation sources for Fediverse users to create a weighted feed showing where your donations could go. It's languished a lot in recent years because we just don't have time to work on it, but I would dearly love to see someone take it on.https://retribute.me/

Just because software is free doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support it financially if you can. Until we achieve utopia, money still powers life.Go find an open source project you like and use a lot and donate to it, if you have the means.

In case you weren't aware, I've been working with the #funkwhale project for over 5 years at this point. I first installed the software back in 2018 and started helping out people who wanted to install it, then I got involved with writing frontend code and documentation. It's no exaggeration to say I owe my entire career to the work I've done on the project. I wrote about this a bit in my blog a while back.https://sporiff.dev/2022/11/13/path-to-writing/

There's a lot we want to do with #funkwhale, but we need funding to make that happen. If you are able to contribute and you want to see the project succeed, please consider throwing some money our way.https://www.funkwhale.audio/donate/

I'm beginning to wonder if all German systems just run on pre-UTF8 systems. My name causes them to go haywire, and my colleagues whose names contain umlauts have to use "oe"/"ue" etc. just to sign up for things. The fada in my name is actually kind of important. If you remove it, it becomes a Scottish name rather than an Irish one. That wasn't my parents' intent.

If anyone is looking for a technical writer or integration/frontend developer, I'm looking for an employer. I'm on a Blaue Karte in Germany but am looking to get permanent residency soon, so I'm looking for a company that has a presence here to please the Ausländerbehörde
