Tomorrow a year ago was an exciting moment for me: I changed my name and email at work to Elin, which basically meant coming out publicly. At the moment my situation at work is complicated, I will not go into details, but this is unrelated to my coming out. A thread. 1/6

Did you come out of the closet because you were too fat to fit in it anymore?

In December 2021 I had already come out to the two groups at work that I was most involved with. The reactions were, without exception, very positive. In the months before I had already informed a lot of close colleagues. This meant that I could practice the story I wanted to tell. They were also, after my announcement in December, ready with applause and compliments (because of Corona this was mostly an online meeting). After my announcement my managers (who knew what I was going to tell) said something about the importance of diversity. I think I told my story very confidently but after I was done talking I was completely stressed out and I have no memory of what they said. 2/6

On January 24th 2022 my mail address (and everything associated with it) was changed to Elin and it was time to inform the other people I worked with. I sent the email below to about 200 people. About half of them already knew and for them it was a sign that they could really start using Elin in public. For others it came as a total surprise. I got 60 very positive reactions by mail and many more in person. I have great colleagues! This was the email I sent from my brand new mail address: Dear all,Over the last two years I have come to realize that I feel more female than male. It is time for a big step: I would like to ask you to call me Elin and she/her. I can be reached on this mail address (the old one will become an alias). It may take some time to get used to this (also for me) but I’m sure it will work out.Thanks,Elin3/6

The reason for this multi-step coming out was practical. December is just very busy for everyone. HR and IT were very helpful in changing my name in all systems, but this turned out to be more complicated than expected and they couldn’t finish the preparations in December. They did a really good job and the transition was very smooth. They used my case to make a protocol for this, so hopefully it will be quicker in the future. On the other hand I didn’t want to postpone it until January. My plan was to go to the Christmas party of my group as Elin (in a dress etc) so I wanted to come out to them before that (unfortunately, because of Corona there was no Christmas party). Some colleagues already suspected that something was going on. I wore more feminine clothes, earrings, and occasionally even heels. I was just ready to come out and didn’t want to wait. 4/6

All in all I’m very happy with how it went. Of course I’m very glad to have such supportive colleagues. I think it was a good decision to gradually inform people. When I came out in December and January I had my story ready and I knew that I had a lot of support. I wouldn’t wait too long, because it gets awkward for others (can I call you Elin in this meeting or should I use your old name?) but in this case there was a Christmas holiday in between so it was really only a few weeks. 5/6

You are nothing but a fat mockery of a woman. You will never be a woman, why don't you go and kill yourself. Also you're definitely not fooling anyone, it was clear that you're a man from the moment I saw your profile pic.
