@qwertzalotl @Remittancegirl @SecularJeffrey @cstross I understood that “milk first” was to protect the vulnerable porcelain from the heat shock of the tea.

@stux maar de afgelopen 10 jaar, na de decentralisatie, is het wel echt bergafwaarts gegaan.

I’m looking for examples of policies that companies can implement that actually benefit people in the LGBTQIA+ community. Next week I’m having a brainstorm with colleagues about this. Our company already raises the progress pride flag in June so that is a good start, but I’m looking for something more substantial. An example we already thought of is parental leave when adopting a child. I’m looking for ideas of policies, whether they have been implemented or not. It can be based on your own experience or a story you heard about or read on a website. I’m also interested in policies that sounded interesting and have been tried but didn’t really work out. Boosts are welcome.

I’ve been on Mastodon for a few weeks now but I realised I never introduced myself. Hi, I’m Elin :) I have a PhD in ultrafast laser spectroscopy, where I used ultrashort laser pulses to study how chemical processes proceed. I’m now doing applied research, using light to measure things like pollution etc. I’m a trans woman. Since January 2022 I have been completely out of the closet, using the name Elin everywhere and presenting myself as a woman :) (and wondering why I didn’t do this earlier). I’m Dutch and live in the the Netherlands, near Amsterdam. I’ve lived in Sweden (Lund) for 6 months and in Switzerland (Zurich) for 6 years. I like to bike around the countryside, cooking/baking, fiddling with Python and I do a bit of photography.

Tomorrow a year ago was an exciting moment for me: I changed my name and email at work to Elin, which basically meant coming out publicly. At the moment my situation at work is complicated, I will not go into details, but this is unrelated to my coming out. A thread. 1/6

In December 2021 I had already come out to the two groups at work that I was most involved with. The reactions were, without exception, very positive. In the months before I had already informed a lot of close colleagues. This meant that I could practice the story I wanted to tell. They were also, after my announcement in December, ready with applause and compliments (because of Corona this was mostly an online meeting). After my announcement my managers (who knew what I was going to tell) said something about the importance of diversity. I think I told my story very confidently but after I was done talking I was completely stressed out and I have no memory of what they said. 2/6

On January 24th 2022 my mail address (and everything associated with it) was changed to Elin and it was time to inform the other people I worked with. I sent the email below to about 200 people. About half of them already knew and for them it was a sign that they could really start using Elin in public. For others it came as a total surprise. I got 60 very positive reactions by mail and many more in person. I have great colleagues! This was the email I sent from my brand new mail address: Dear all,Over the last two years I have come to realize that I feel more female than male. It is time for a big step: I would like to ask you to call me Elin and she/her. I can be reached on this mail address (the old one will become an alias). It may take some time to get used to this (also for me) but I’m sure it will work out.Thanks,Elin3/6

The reason for this multi-step coming out was practical. December is just very busy for everyone. HR and IT were very helpful in changing my name in all systems, but this turned out to be more complicated than expected and they couldn’t finish the preparations in December. They did a really good job and the transition was very smooth. They used my case to make a protocol for this, so hopefully it will be quicker in the future. On the other hand I didn’t want to postpone it until January. My plan was to go to the Christmas party of my group as Elin (in a dress etc) so I wanted to come out to them before that (unfortunately, because of Corona there was no Christmas party). Some colleagues already suspected that something was going on. I wore more feminine clothes, earrings, and occasionally even heels. I was just ready to come out and didn’t want to wait. 4/6

All in all I’m very happy with how it went. Of course I’m very glad to have such supportive colleagues. I think it was a good decision to gradually inform people. When I came out in December and January I had my story ready and I knew that I had a lot of support. I wouldn’t wait too long, because it gets awkward for others (can I call you Elin in this meeting or should I use your old name?) but in this case there was a Christmas holiday in between so it was really only a few weeks. 5/6

Oh wow, I thought flying cars only happened in movies. In the video in the link you can see security camera footage of the car of a Belgian football player flying through the air. He was driving 200 km/h instead of 90 km/h (125 mph and 55 mph, respectively)https://nos.nl/artikel/2469549-auto-van-profvoetballer-vliegt-sporthal-binnen

@stux isn’t that because movies in the 70’s and 80’s were shot in sunny LA, while movies about WWII are usually set in muddy fields?

@stux do you have a background in game development? It seems like you achieved a lot!? (On your own?) Or is running a few Mastodon servers not challenging enough?
