I've never noticed the strange shape of West Virginia before.Until now, I've only looked at it as part of a bigger map where the little offshoots don't stand out. There must be some kind of story behind those frog legs and the one sharp corner.#GoFigure

@grammargirl There's a good book by Mark Stern that explains the story - "How the States Got Their Shapes".

@grammargirl It being West Virginia, I was expecting a crazy gerrymandering map after looking at that, but this is sane compared to some states. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia%27s_congressional_districts

@grammargirl Most of it is based on where the water is, but the horizontal/east-west part of the sharp corner is the famed Mason-Dixon line.

@grammargirl One can only infer that surveyors are unable or unwilling to carry their transits across rivers.

@grammargirl The border of West Virginia with Virginia has to do with which counties sided with the Union and which with the confederates. The former where then awarded statehood on their own.

@grammargirl I think most of the weird shape was done when Virginia was drawn, and then you only have to worry about how they split it during the slaveholder's revolt. Fairfax and Alexandria wanted to join WV too, which would have radically changed the shape (and had a free state on the DC border during the rebellion, although probably an occupied free state.)http://www.virginiaplaces.org/boundaries/wvboundary.html

@grammargirl I’ve always loved looking up and reading stories of state shapes, including Delaware’s 12-mile circle centered around the cupola of the courthouse in New Castle, and the boot of Missouri carved out because of an influential rancher back in the day.

@grammargirl Oh, also check out sometime the town of Estcourt Maine that ended up with the US-Canada border slicing through existing houses. And Point Robert’s Washington that is only accessible by boat, plane, or driving through Canada.

@leebennett I've fantasy shopped for property in Point Roberts on Zillow many times!Sometimes, Pat and I joke with each other saying, "Go home, Canadians!" because the people in Point Roberts put up signs with that slogan because of some dispute, and we couldn't believe how stupid they were. Do they not know they have to go through Canada to get to the rest of their country? 😂

@BibleStudent Thanks! That's fascinating. Those lines on the map originally contained so much it's wild.
