Here's an article I wrote after ruminating on this for the past few weeks, including with the help of some readers here (thank you!). @LivePaola I would like to read and/or promote the article. But can you please move away from substack to libre alternatives like writefreely or ghost? Substack is a blackbox platform just like facebook and chatgpt.

@LivePaola That would be good for everyone IMHO. Personally I decided to read it on substack because I was curious. But the world would be more beautiful if we all stop promoting non-free platforms.

@aijooyoom I have an older Wordpress.com account, which used to be free, and then I started paying to remove the ads infestation - QED. But this raises the larger question of business models. Do you think community donations and volunteer time will be enough to build robust mainstream platforms?

@LivePaola I am no business expert but from a libre and practical perspective here are some options:For technical people and/or for people who have an IT team:selfhost wordpress (old school option but work is being done on integration with fediverse)selfhost ghost (similar functionality as substack)selfhost writefreely (integrates with the fediverse)selfhost (or deploy through something like netlify) static site generator like zola or hugorun a small freedombox, yunohost or https://libreserver.org/ either on a VPS or on your own small device (make sure to automate external backups)For non-technical people who do not have IT teams:write.asghost.orgThe last two options reduce your independence. Would be better to get an IT team if possible (even if your IT team is just 2 people).
