Just converted this cheap $30 Lenovo N42 Chromebook into a full fledged #Linux desktop running bulletproof #nixos and #flatpak with 8+ hours battery life!Should I do a tutorial on how to do this, or am I the only crazy person into cheap old hardware?

@codemonkeymike You should absolutely make a tutorial. There is way too much usable tech going into landfills and way too many underprivileged people who could really use a cheap laptop with a modern Linux install.

I am using an Acer C740 in a similar manner. If you do a tutorial, message me and I'll boost and share it. Especially if is a blog post.

@codemonkeymike I'd love to see a tutorial! (IDK when was the last time I bought a computer less than 5 years old - usually much older - or ran anything other than linux...would probably learn something if you made one!)

@codemonkeymike i did this very recently with my Asus C223N chromebook - it's the apollo lake chipset/cpu so it's a bit wonky(no sound and picky about usb) but it works surprisingly well besides that. I'd strongly say do it.

@codemonkeymikeCheap old hardware is the best. Especially for kids and parents. People tend to hold on to expensive hardware long past its service life, but cheap hardware can be stockpiled and replaced so easily. NixOS makes re-installs so ridiculously simple too.š

@codemonkeymike Very good idea. I use some old PC(2017)/Notebook(2012)/Netbook (2010) - all with opensuse tumbleweed/kde-plasma. I prefer old devices, with Linux everything will be recognizes. No trouble with uefi in bios. Installation is very easy. I use a safe home-network and be a only-user on the devices. 2 devices are encrypted. Encryption is too mutch for the netbook. #olddevices #linux

@codemonkeymike Old laptops are widely underestimated as servers with built-in battery backups! How to hack them into shape sounds like a great tutorial.

@codemonkeymike I'd love documentation for your endeavor. It's been nearly a decade since I've ventured into running vanilla Linux on a Chromebook, needless to say it was such a pain in the rear back then that it wasn't worth the hassle for your average lackey such as I. Plus Nix is Nix so any documentation is great.

@charliebrownau @codemonkeymike Just because something isn't worth recommending to you doesn't mean it's not worth recommending to others. I'd rather someone be on NixOS than Windows or Mac.
