Maybe...I don't know...stop using #YouTube ?It's unfortunate that folks like Linus won't look into alternative platforms. Makes me all the more impressed with creators like @thelinuxEXP @vkc and others who are making great content AND sharing it on decentralized platforms. 👏 https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/23/23653115/linus-tech-tips-youtube-hack-crypto-scam

@tilvids unfortunately most big content creators just want the money so no hit is enough for them to leave YouTube. Even if they have to start over.

@tilvids @thelinuxEXP @vkc Wait, wut? You know he operates his own alternative platform, right? https://www.floatplane.com/discoverThis is doing it right. Owning your own content. YT is down but the content is not gone. That said it would be nice if there was a bigger effort to post it more places. Loosen the grip of YT at least.

@tilvids @thelinuxEXP @vkc Bad take IMO. This attack was *likely* a very targeted attack against LTT, perhaps utilizing techniques like cookie thefts from a compromised device. The only reason YouTube was targeted was because that’s where the audience and the $ is, if PeerTube was their core audience and they were targeted it would’ve been the same result, likely easier since I can almost guarantee YT has stronger security than most PT instances.

@tilvids @thelinuxEXP @vkc we're definitely considering dropping YouTube and focussing on supporter content. Biggest challenge is the storage as you know. For me, it comes down to YouTube allowing utter garbage and not taking any kind of content reporting seriously. Plus, security, and grossly weight stuff.

@tilvids @thelinuxEXP @vkc you should work on content monetisation. Otherwise, even the creators that are on your platform arent really incentivised to promote it.If you only want to be a content delivery platform and not part of creator economy, thats a different story...

@vkc @realsimon @thelinuxEXP This is exactly how I want to eventually generate a revenue stream for TILvids. Find a few sponsors that are targeted at the INSTANCE demographic, rather than individual users. That way the ads/sponsors are still targeted, without having to know anything about any specific users.Great insight @vkc

@vkc @realsimon @thelinuxEXP Bingo. In all of this, I'm trying to think...how can all of this be run as a non-profit? It'd be nice to get a non-profit ad-distribution group set up, whose soul purpose is to connect vetted instances to vetted sponsors. If every single instance has to try to replicate connecting with sponsors, it's almost certainly going to guarantee only a few major instances can make it work (if any can, at all).Let me know if anyone is interested in working that problem...

@vkc @thelinuxEXP @abcxyz @tilvids And, in the case of Linus, he has an entire company with more than a hundred employes. "Switch to Peertube!" is a way make sure that goes bankrupt, right now...

@niccolove @vkc @thelinuxEXP @abcxyz Well, "Switch to ONLY PeerTube" would do that. Fortunately, it's easy to have your PeerTube channel shadow your YT channel. At the moment, most people watching PeerTube instances are no longer using YouTube (or using it less), so you're not really LOSING any users, you're just gaining other users in a non-monetizable way.

@abcxyz @tilvids @vkc As much as I love the idea of PeerTube, I have to agree! Right now, if a lot people moved to watch my content there, it would mean the death of the channel as a full time job.As long as the audience there is small, it’s manageable, but if it starts taking away monetized views, something will have to give :/

@thelinuxEXP @abcxyz @vkc I totally feel that @thelinuxEXP And likewise, community support of a #PeerTube instance works to a point, but it only scales so much. Certainly encouraging large creators to start their own instance once they hit a certain size can help with that, but so would sponsorship. It definitely feels like SOME level of monetization will need to enter PeerTube at some point, if it truly wants to contend in any meaningful way.

@realsimon @tilvids @thelinuxEXP @vkc ok I think I have started a long debate here lol.But it all comes down to one point- Does Peertube, or for that matter, Fediverse as a whole, even support such features like monetizing or being a payer-exclusive platform? Cause if it does, we can just start our own instances which act like patreons or a discord server for those who pay! Anyone is welcome to correct me here :)

@abcxyz @realsimon @thelinuxEXP @vkc This is, in essence, what is happening with TILvids right now. Except instead of a single creator, it's many, and most of the donations are going to simply make sure the site can run.The problem with community donations for creators is that it just eventually doesn't scale enough to make it a sole focus (as @thelinuxEXP was describing). And so it puts the creator in a position of making some hard decisions eventually.

@tilvids @abcxyz @realsimon @thelinuxEXP @vkc For me, as both a smallish content creator and a video watcher, I would love ads that are based on the video content, not my data.I'd love to see a non invasive way of doing pre-roll ads that match the tone of the instance. For example, on @tilvids it could be ads for online learning, etc, or maybe ads from other creators on the platform. If I could run ads for other creators, no matter my channel size, and give a % back to the instance, I would

@tilvids I won't repeat what others have said, but I wish people didn't do content creation as a full time job, and just did it as a side hobby instead. It'd make videos so much more authentic imo, and make the transition to Peertube instances substantially less painful.I'm sure people have their reasons for doing what they do, of course (I'm sure it's enjoyable compared to other jobs), and my wish is likely unrealistic at this rate. But it's my wish nonetheless.

@thelinuxEXP @RyunoKi @realsimon @abcxyz @vkc I've wanted to try to find an ethical sponsor for TILvids for a while now...not necessarily because we need the revenue (yet, thanks to the community) but because I want to figure that out because before I transition it to a non-profit, it has to be able to stand on its own and scale.Any good companies I should be looking at?

hey @tilvids , regarding to LTT's situation: I planning to be a PerrTube video creator. But, BUT!..Is there ANY way to prevent MY channel from being hacked, so I wouldn't be in the same situation as well as Linus did?Like, if I'll be a video creator, I would do ANYTHING to Prevent my Tilvids channel from being hacked.Tell me ALL the ways from preventing my channel being hacked. Thanks!

@expertmanofficial I don't believe that I ever stated in my original post moving to an alternative would be inherently better from a security standpoint...just that LTT should do it.That said, there likely are reasons why moving to open platforms like PeerTube could offer advantages in security, including a more dispersed target vector, open-source code that can be vetted by the community, etc. Also, LTT only had such a speedy resolution because of his size; good luck to smaller channels...
