@CliffWade Honestly, I don't know best practices. I just use what I feel is appropriate for the individual post. I think I voted 6+, but then realize it's more of an "Other" response :Hehe:

@CliffWade ,Hashtags are topic identifiers (that adhere to the #Web's fundamental essence). Thus, I typically use an amount reflective of the topics associated with the content of a post 😀 #Hashtags #Fediverse #SemanticWeb #LinkedData

@mdmrn LOL All good. And I agree. Some times I use 2 - 3, some times I use 6 or more. Just depends on the post and the situation.

@CliffWade Depends on how many are needed. There are at least two good reasons for hashtags for me. To find something easily and to filter something easily. I, for example, post music videos quite often. To give every follower who doesn't like music or a certain genre/artist the possibility to filter them out, I use at least one music, one genre and one artist hashtag. Could easily be more (if multiple artists collab in this video etc).

@sariash Exactly this right here! Very good use of hashtags indeed and so very helpful. There's definitely a way to use them to benefit not only yourself but so many others and that's something that everyone should consider learning.

@CliffWade honestly I always found hashtags distracting and needless. I only use them for marking a post that is "serialized". I know is not best practices but is the part I like less of mastodon.

@Nekoplanet I get that people find hashtags annoying or distracting or anything similar. I feel that way at various times. But they can also be super helpful in finding things later especially on this platform where search is a lot more limited.

@CliffWade i think part of my reluctance to use them is because is a very anglocentric approach to do things. It doesn't work necessarily well in languages other than English.

@Nekoplanet Never really thought about it, but you are certainly correct. I rarely see hashtags in other languages outside of English.

@CliffWade we can use in Spanish but they don't look natural. And they usually convey less information when used, unless is something like a person's name or YOUUSEAVERYLONGHASHTAG. And punny hashtags translate even worse.

@cliffwade I honestly can't say. I just got it in my head at one point that any time I use hashtags I should always use the same amount and five felt like not too many but not too few.

@CliffWade It entirely depends on the post and the topic. A post could interest many people with varied subjects as their primary interest, some posts have a nested kind of thing e.g a politician, a state, a party, economics and politics etc, Some posts have a lot of relevant hashtags some only 1-2 🤷♂️

@voron Yep, I agree. I often use 2 - 3 hashtags, but then at times I will use many more than that. Just all depends really.

@CliffWade The exact precise answer is... it depends. ;) I'm no expert but I would suggest hashtagging only the main points you want people to focus on. Less is probably better; lots of hashtags muddles your message. Seeing a paragraph of hashtags looks like a cry for attention to me. But, of course, each toot is unique and one shouldn't be afraid to bend the rules once in a while if you feel it's necessary.

@chrisjeter Using hashtags for the main points is certainly important, though I believe there are reasons to use other hashtags as well for certain things or certain posts. I don't feel any specific number is correct and I feel that using lots of hashtags is often ok as well. I think each person reading a post has their own opinion as well as far as what they like to see or not.
