"I used to think the top environmental problems facing the world were global warming, environmental degradation, and ecosystem collapse, and that we scientists could fix those problems with enough science. But I was wrong. The real problem is not those three items, but greed, selfishness, and apathy. And for that, we need a spiritual and cultural transformation. And we scientists don't know how to do that.” - Gus Speth, U.S. Natural Resources Defense CouncilLEARN MORE HERE -- https://medium.com/@thelandoft/good-science-isnt-enough-be307e594729 #Science #ClimateChange #BiodiversityLoss #Ecology #Environment

@breadandcircuses The US. and IMO the West in general, has under the guise of neoliberalism chosen to be ruled by total sociopaths. Now we are failing to find ways to wrest control from those pathological rulers.

@Alienated53 @breadandcircuses Yes, we have created a system that favors socio and psychopaths. Let's give credit to Milton Friedman and the Chicago School credit here. It destroyed the social contract.

@gdeihl @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses the fact is many don't understand there is an actual social contract and believe they must obey draconian, immoral and pointless laws simply because they 'are' laws. They don't understand that ' the law' is man-made and man-made laws are dictated by the few and are often in sharp contradiction to natural law. We, as humans, must realise that we are are not bound by these things-we must recreate the contract

@ayarocks @gdeihl @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses If you live in a representative democracy, laws are not “dictated by the few” - we have a hand in making them for ourepselves. We often don’t like them but that’s another matter.

@shacker @ayarocks @gdeihl @breadandcircuses What representative democracy. Research shows that we are an oligarchy. Will of the voters is thwarted.

@shacker @ayarocks @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses Our laws are routinely undermined, unenforced, and ignored. They are unevenly applied depending on your color and socioeconomic status. Certainly we bear some brunt, but there is much going against us in terms of how the system actually "works."

@shacker @gdeihl @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses 1) you don't live in a representative democracy. 2) the leader of a representative democracy and the gov he rules over are the few who can easily enact what they want in sharp contradiction to what they were voted on 3) this happens constantly

@ayarocks @shacker @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses Executive privilege has expanded tremendously in recent years. Presidents have turned to it because little to nothing can be done on a bipartisan basis. It's not a good situation. The height of the folly for me was when Bush was given unilateral power to declare war, undermining an essential protection in the Constitution to prevent a mad person from declaring war.

@gdeihl @ayarocks @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses All good points, and even when it's "functioning," a representative democracy backfires all over the place, which is how we end up with a Supreme Court working against the will of the people because they were appointed by a president who lost the popular election because the Electoral College doesn't represent. So yes, I recant my comment from this morning.

@shacker @ayarocks @Alienated53 @breadandcircuses Good examples of how a mostly well-intentioned system has been undermined. The lower courts have been swung far right as well. Trump made hundreds of appointments to them. And gerrymandering often (assisted by lower courts) of course keeps the Republican Party alive at this point, which represents nothing but the wealthy. Yes, the Electoral College needs to be abolished.
