@flexghost people take things for granted, and assume those rights are forever, so don't take things like this seriously, until the rights are gone, then they complain, by which time it is too late. Defend what you have while you have it.The US population allowed Roe vs Wade to be revoked in the supreme court, and seem to be oblivious to what is coming.

@ayarocks @flexghost I think we can do our best, if people join mastodon they had better get used to the idea we have discussions on difficult and sensitive subjects. We are far less interested in some escapade of a love island contestant, footballers wives, footballers or other celebrity rubbish.Hopefully we can keep it that way eh.Today is budget day, lets see what happens with that.

@ayarocks @flexghost We are a minority all in one place, that makes us quite a force.What are your thoughts about facebook setting up a mastodon server and joining the fedi, I am worried by that, what are their real intentions.Saying that the BBC report seems to suggest it will be independent, so it may not even federate here, but will just rival what we have.

@zleap @flexghost to be honest I had no idea! But yes probably anything with Facebook involved will not br positive. You are right about minority able to enact change. It's hard though - we've been taught to do nothing. Hard for us to know how or what to do. We don't even learn about true revolutions at school. Have you read BS jobs? Our lives are intentionally made to be mindless

@ayarocks @flexghost The best thing about the internet is that there is a huge amount of information, you can find a guide for kids on quantum physics or download cutting edge academic papers on related tooics.I have found quite a few PhD researchers on here, in fact one was tooting from a conference a while back, I asked about if a planet with an aurora would indicate a magnetic field and if this was also an essential pointer for life as our own magnetic field protects us from solar radiation, I did get a response. That is the nice thing, people post content and interact. The Uk is pathetic, look at that indidcent in London where the local council wanted to rename 'Black boy lane' as it was seen by them as racist, there was a person locally who was Black and didn't object to it at all. To me the only racism there is the council making a adecision as they clearly assume people who are Black are not capable of doing that.Schools are scared of the internet because of the information therein, all they need to do is teach how to find information and give people the tools to tell the difference between good / poor information. I did a course online about e-safety, don't talk or trust strangers, so it makes people paranoid. I like the saying 'A stranger is a friend you have not met yet' I think it may be Irish (but not sure) we need to be giving people the tools to assess people, trust is earned but also based on behaviour chatting here is fine, just set some barriers and don't let people cross them. But the nice thing about interacting is there are people from all over the world. have a look look at 'ask for evidence https://www.askforevidence.org/index this is really good, technollogy changes too fast for education systems to keep up, so we need to be arming people with the tools and techniques they need. The same techniques can be used to check on people, which can be positive if you see what other papers or research they are involved in.The internet is there to explore and we need to protect it from corporate take over when information will then be only available to the 'select' few if we are not careful.
