@RDHale Yes. It's all tried-and-tested. Portugal model for drugs - decriminalise users, treat as a public health issue; Finland model for homelessness - make housing the priority, use services to help maintain the tenancy; New Zealand model for sex work - decriminalise sex workers and procurers, regulate to keep everyone safe...etc.Conservatives have a big problem with not doing stuff that provably works, while continuing to do stuff that provably doesn't.

@BarrenPlanet @RDHale It's the naturalistic fallacy or something very closely related to it.Conservatives confuse what they think should be for what is.https://disunitedstates.org/2022/08/06/a-theory-of-conservative-epistemology/

@Benfell @RDHale Right on. And when reality refuses to conform, they only double down and become even more extreme. Their wrong-headedness is always someone else's fault. Self-reflection isn't part of their repertoire. 🙄

@BarrenPlanet @RDHale keeping status quo while promising the past is their entire thing. It's by default always easier, known, nostalgic, simpler than anything progressives can offer, even when it either benefits a small number of people, or is completely mythic BS

@BarrenPlanet @RDHale Weirdly we have politicians with 'beliefs' rather than politicians with a basic moral code and the brains to search out what works in other places and adapt it to our situation. People who 'believe' drugs are bad, sex work is bad, basic income is bad, housing the homeless is bad are undermining our society.

@BarrenPlanet @RDHale Yes, they think it's better to have "abstinence-only sex education" in high schools, proven to result in high teen pregnancy (hello Bristol Palin and Lauren Boebert's son), instead of instructing students on birth control, STDs and consent. And look, this started back in the 80s, when high schools started debating whether to put condom machines in the bathrooms. THEY NEVER CHANGE. It's all Bible this and morality that. Still doesn't work!

@BarrenPlanet @RDHale Conservatives prefer LOOKING LIKE they're doing the right thing to actually doing it. They also prefer punishing people for their misfortunes to helping them recover from them (and forget preventing them in the first place).
