I moved all my notes from Notion to #Emacs #OrgMode. The thing that pushed me over the edge was that, instead of fixing their slow web ui, they started releasing "AI" text generation features. Is org-mode good? Not particularly, but with 34 lines of elisp customization, it's good-enough for me. And it's fast. OMG, it's so fast compared to web apps.I also tried a few other "note taking" apps, but they seem to be universally bad at text editing.

@scvalex what short comings does #OrgMode have in your opinion?

@dekkzz76 It's just not good. I realize that this is not actionable, but it's the best way I can put it.It's a collection of functions that do stuff. This is great if you want to spend a lot of time building something for yourself, but it's pretty bad if you just want to write down some notes. For me specifically, the blocker was the lack of search and navigation usable out of the box. It took me hours to make something useful out of org-agenda, counsel-rg, and project-find-file.

@dekkzz76 @scvalex I think expectations for "just writing down some notes" really varies widely. If you literally just need to write some notes just start writing in a file, notes.org for example. To you point that it's got lots of functions and stuff, I think org-mode isn't an out of the box experience. More like an erector set or a lump of clay I guess. To me, that's its simple plain text syntax (I still call it org but orgdown is being popularized https://karl-voit.at/2021/11/27/orgdown/).

@dekkzz76 @scvalex I use org-roam for capturing. It facilitates taking a note about a thing and putting it somewhere. Currently, for me most of these captures are to my daily worklog or journal. Where I have a file named for each day in a directory. That somewhere, the right place really is a personal thing. I've spent countless hours reading, pondering, mentally bikeshedding, and tying out different "the right place".

@dekkzz76 @scvalex My current thought is that the right place simply changes over time as you learn what does and doesn't work for you and as available tooling comes about.

@dekkzz76 @scvalex For using org-roam-node-find I highly recommend adjusting the display template especially if you have many individual nodes with the same name (I see this in more deeply nested nodes). Most of these captures are to my daily worklog or journal. But I have templates for each of my recurring meetings. They often link to my non time series notes.

@dekkzz76 @scvalex org-roam-ui gives a pretty and fun visualization to explore interlinked notes.Deft might be worth checking out. https://github.com/jrblevin/deft org-ql is another thing to checkout for search https://github.com/alphapapa/org-ql
