But it does give us a lot of concerning dilemmas. We probably don't *want* to encourage China's less ethical employer practices, but also a big reason the things they make are affordable is because they don't give their workers much pay or benefits. There's many governments we don't want to give funding to, but the only way around that is telling everyone we trade with to evade taxation. Feels like we're either stuck with a lower standard of living or crappier work conditions for someone.

@p @graf @Arty24 A story I always tell is being at an Infosec conference and seeing a pitch given by a guy, who was in charge of the state highways, in support of autonomous driving. To support his case he overlaid a local map showing the life expectancy of one of the worst neighborhoods in the country with one showing the lack of automobile ownership in the same area. Conclusion: lack of mobility is what is leading to lower life expectancy in that area!

@KarlDahl @p @graf @Arty24 I thought of saying something but, at the same conference, I had already chided some green-energy idiot and a guy whose whole thesis was that the tech industry would never collude to trample the rights of individuals. My challenges were rebuffed by a crowd that's supposed to make their money being skeptical contrarians, but I suppose I'm the only one in the whole friggin' city.

I suspect it to not be true elsewhere: heavy traffic tends to accompany (or produce) heavy economic activity. The reason the 710 just stops abruptly instead of connecting with the 210 is lobbying by the businesses and municipalities that wanna tax those businesses. Heaviest traffic in LA is the 405 around the west side, least poor area, the Getty's up there. Surface streets, it's Hollywood, the west side, etc.Bad shit in the air is usually industrial. People don't wanna live by factories, docks, sewage treatment plants, refineries, so it's cheaper to live there. Not many factories still in operation here nowadays, but geography dictates that the others aren't going away.

Though cars do create bad shit in the air from tire particulate - simply rubber rolling against the road creates small rubber particles, and that ain't good for the air. It usually shows itself as a bad PM2.5 measurement.
