@judgedread Honestly it's brinksmanship against the national DNC. The GOP doesn't have the stomach for it, but maybe we can all agree to dissolve Congress and suspend elections

@jb @NoDoxGregBrady @AlphaKiloPapa @JoshuaSlocum @VIcFury My father in law got an Apple laptop. My brother in law and I high fived, because we pictured a world in which we didn't spend 30 mins - 4 hours every visit parsing vague requests about performance and deleting shit he'd let be auto-installed. It was pretty good for the past 4-5 years because we set up an admin account on his Windows machines which either of us could use to prevent installs, helped a lot, it wasn't so bad, but man, Apple would be wonderfulWithin two months he dropped it, shattering the screen, and can't be bothered to get it fixed. I think he likes our devotion

@EvilSandmich @Morghur It's a massive topic, and I have come to believe that the next hundred years will be largely devoted to correcting the record on the previous 200 or so. The sheer amount of detail and number of things that could be studied could occupy several l lifetimes

Weddings are a community event, a bringing together of two families, and I didn't understand that sufficiently until after I experienced it for myselfMy brother's marriage was planned out of the gate by both mothers, with my mom being more conservative while the bride's leaned toward the grandiose. The thing is that you can't go "big, but cheap," and like building a house, everything ends up costing about 30% more than you'd planned to spend. Soon my sister in law's dad stepped in and said, "I'll bankroll everything, and nothing is too good for my baby girl." By 9 months prior to the event, it had grown to over 300 invitees and pretty much every selection was premium category. They grew up together, and were high school sweethearts, so they were inviting almost everyone they knew and their parents, not just relatives. The bride assumed, with the wisdom of a 20 year old girl, "They'll all bring presents"The first thing I want to tell you is that *nobody* brings presents unless they feel obligated to do so, or truly want to, so you baseball coach from high school will be there for the ceremony and a beer, will shake your hand to wish you well, and will then leave. The event host and caterers will make you pay for him and his wife in their rate calculationThree months before the wedding they found out that the father in law wasn't paying the bills, in fact he had gone broke and was kiting checks to keep up appearances. He was confronted about this and admitted it; he'd declared bankruptcy and had been hiding it from his family. So my dad was stuck with the cost, which ballooned well over $60k in 1999 dollars. In the aspirational suburban parents world that wasn't so bad, but it traumatized my motherThe most insane weddings I've ever seen are the Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese ones, where there is a massive formal show by the parents and the marriage is usually essentially arranged. Aspirational Whites are corny but not nearly as psychoticRT: https://poa.st/objects/a2462872-b40a-441a-8f4a-1a0bf0fbc6a9
