I want to scream. I was at a FUNERAL and a man groped me and then everybody helped him and fussed over him because "he's old". People rushed to his rescue as he immediately said "Whoops, I fell". I felt invisible and helpless. Like a child.

@bruja Makes me think of the family xmas parties with this uncle that would try to corner, in front of everyone, his young nieces pawing them, getting close to them. The drunker he got, the worse it got. We told our parents of course, but no one wanted to step in and tell him off, and they’d shush us. So we were left to fend for ourselves. We came up with a non-verbal plan, all of us girls, and as soon as we saw that old pervert getting up to his tricks, all of us girls would head in his direction and extricate his target.I gather from your story that he is not a member of your family? So you can’t make plans with someone else who would be sympathetic to your discomfort. If you have it in you, refuse to go to any event where you think you might see the pervert. And maybe have a word or three with the person who introduced him to you. That he or she is protecting a sex offender. Stay strong and don’t take NO for an answer.

@Chronic-Yonic Sigh, it was my mum. It was her childhood friend's brother. I tried to say, "Mum, surely, you didn't fall for that" loudly where everybody could hear. She said "I fell on that step too". It was incredibly hard for me in the moment to translate "I know what I'm feeling".When I got home I was like - Yes, he didn't seem startled. His fall was graceful. He's used to that home (unlike my mum who was there for the first time). He held on for too long. Explained himself not seconds after. Chased me down to explain himself another time. He looked me top and bottom like I was a piece of meat the minute he walked in. Also, it sounds incredibly brave and amazing and courageous what you girls did. Society doesn't make it easy for us to stick together!

@bruja Well you should tell your mum that she ought to respect how you are feeling instead of protecting someone else! My mom basically said the same thing, the uncle I was talking about was her bro-in-law and she didn’t want to make problems for the family and her sister, so she didn’t mind offering her three daughters as peace offerings 🤬By your mum’s attitude and reaction, she is making you doubt what you feel which is legitimate, that’s why when you got home you overanalyzed what happened. It was an assault, you know.

@bruja When we wonder why they have a complete open road like this and how could this happen, it’s not hard to understand, it’s starts innocently with people protecting them, even on a smaller, micro scale like in your case. Every case of assault should be pushed back and the victim(s) protected.

@Chronic-Yonic @bruja Years ago, family of mine, island connections but had lived in Glasgow, had a bust up in family over this. Younger cousin had suddenly become reluctant to go to her uncle and aunt’s…my cousin’s in laws…after spending years in and out house. She did babysitting for them and all that, for ages. It came out that the uncle had been trying to have a go at her, to what extent I’m not sure, but it put the wind up her. She eventually told what happened and my cousin, her dad, went round there and belted him. His wife’s sister, who was married to this man, refused to believe it was true and they never spoke again, she must have known. This also added to the sense of betrayal the kid felt too, that she was being looked on as a liar by people she cared for and trusted.
