One of the Great Unscanned Ones is Computer Shopper Magazine. Massive issues, massive pages. HUGE mass of BBS lists in them, amazing adds. Ebay has a set of 215 (with some damaged) for $3000. If someone wants to get it to me, I'll get it scanned.https://www.ebay.com/itm/295518655041

@textfiles what a collection. I subscribed to it for years in the UK. While in the US on holiday, I picked up a copy and was blown away by how many pages it had. Like twice as thick as the UK edition. I miss the MacBiter articles.

@textfiles total aside, but I went searching for MacBiter, curious who it was and if they're still opining on all things Apple, and happened upon this fantastic article of yours on a specific, old issue of Computer Shopper. Wonderful photos therein:http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/1835

@textfiles Computer Shopper is a relic from the era when you *had* to purchase a new PC every 12-24 months. In retrospect, that's a lot of "shopping".

@textfiles I used to buy one every year or so, read reviews, and wishlist parts, and then mostly not buy from the vendors because the local store's markup was < shipping.

@Charles @textfiles@digipres.club @mos_8502 This will need to be split apart to scan. They're just too insanely put apart.

@textfiles I'd love to put in 50 bucks if someone sets up a crowdfunding thing.

Yeah, this is quite a lot. Wondering if I should do a funding drive. Anyone want to front this money? Is Computer Shopper that important?

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org @textfiles@digipres.club @mos_8502 I had horrible visions of turning page by page and holding down onto a flatbed scanner. I’m glad there’s a quicker way!

@textfiles back in the day it was the best. By far, way to shop for computers and computer parts. I don’t think I ever bought one for the actual magazine articles. It is one of my examples of a publication that was entirely about the ads. (vogue and many fashion magazines especially back years ago are others)I’ve argued that the big mistake media made going online was not moving every print ad online. I’d love a modern, web based version of computer shopper with ads clearly marked

@textfiles my god how many hours of scanning are you signing up for here 👀 fond memories of these.now can you just digitize the experience of attending a giant computer / HAM fest at "The Cow Palace", with randos selling "shareware which has been scanned for viruses", components and ancient consoles out of the back of their Volkeswagons in the parking lot ...
