I am thinking about starting a digital independence and privacy support service for my local community, helping people to protect their data and make use of open source tools. Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar? I feel it should be a) as well-informed as possible b) in-person c) collaborative and d) not for profit. Perhaps something along the lines of repair cafes.I would love to hear any thoughts on the matter.#privacy #opensource #repaircafe

@eliptic We've seen for example 'computer clinics', e.g. West Fleetwood Computer Clinic: https://www.visitfleetwood.info/community/about-local-groups/community-computer-clinic/Essentially a Repair Cafe but specifically focused on smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops.Like your idea of a focus on data and FLOSS - Linux and Lineage often come up in the Repair Cafe environment for supporting older devices, but specific support on finding and using FLOSS tools is a good idea. Let us know what you find!

@pthane Unfortunately I'm some distance away but thanks :) I would still be up for discussing thoughts and ideas with you though, here or elsewhere.

@restartproject Thanks for the link; this looks great. Are you involved in the computer clinics or is that someone else? Defninitely a few questions come to mind!

@eliptic We're not specifically involved in computer clinics, though are active in Restart Parties / Repair Cafes in London where some computer clinic-y activities are part of the repairs. We interviewed West Fleetwood Computer Clinic a few years ago for our podcast - it was a great episode and might be of interest to you https://therestartproject.org/podcast/fleetwood/
