A fine episode 918 @grammargirl !Do you think “dropping an album” might be tied to “needle drop” on 33/45 RPM phonographs where the term meant starting a record or a particular track - or the later term for royalty payments for radio station playback? And for TV series, a friend who works in that business has always said that when the season airs, the production crew goes on hiatus waiting to hear if the network will “pick it up” again - or drop it.Keep up the good grammatical work!

@BPDuggan Thanks! Dropping a record certainly could be from the "needle drop." I'm just not sure.Good to know about the TV business too. I was pretty surprised that exact usage wasn't in the OED.
