I got a text from a friend saying Mississippi had just passed a new Jim Crow Law.My first thought was, "Lol, what's new outrage are libs creating?"Because there's no way in hell MS is going back to Jim Crow. I had to look it up using the narrative term because my friend didn't know the actual law.https://web.archive.org/web/20230308020837/https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/three-things-to-know-about-what-critics-are-calling-mississippi-s-jim-crow-bill/ar-AA18e3ZP1)

So I find MSN.com and see that it's HouseBill 1020. I don't bother reading the article, I wanna see what the bill is. I read a whoooooole bunch before I figure out:"Oh, this is to create a new court system in Jackson City." (Capital of MS.)Nothing in the law even hints at any kind of discrimination. There are also no new laws in there either. Basically, the new court is using the pre-existing laws to make judgements.2)

"How is this a Jim Crow law?" I think in confusion.I decide to finally read the MSN.com article. It turns out Jackson has one of the highest murder rates in the US, has so much crime the courts are backed up trying to deal with it, and--oh-- it also just happens to have a large black population. It's racists because the court will be dealing with mostly black people.... is the logic, it seems.3)

Remember that the entire state of MS has one of the biggest black populations in the US. Jackson having a lot of black people is not some amazing unique thing. There are other places with a hearty black population too in the state. It's just that Jackson manages to also have an enormous amount of crime, so much that it needs it own court to deal with it all.4)

The people objecting the most to this appear to be those directly related to the city itself. They are complaining the Legislature is overreaching by forcing a new court system on the city. If I were cynical, I'd say they don't want it because they've got a nice lucrative system in place & this will disrupt their cashflow. If I'm generous, they sincerely don't think it's needed & is a waste of tax dollars that could be better spent on roads.5)

I think the cynical approach might be more accurate. If it was just a matter of wasting tax money, it's an odd thing to label this House Bill as some new Jim Crow Law. Labeling it that way is definitely to get people to hate it without actually reading it or understanding why it was created. Luckily (???) everyone (?????) thinks MS is racist so this kind of hubbub isn't likely to create the drama needed to rescind the bill.6)

Anyway, hope the new courts are clean and pure and don't succumb to corruption (which I suspect plagues a city that crime infested).end)

@lynnmedichi Interesting. You did good to take the time to read the bill first and then compare it to what was being said in the media.

@SweetIceTea What's sad is my friend wasn't able to read the bill because it was, basically, "too wordy". It makes me wonder how many people never bother reading the factual/sources b/c they're "too complicated" & end up trusting the commentary b/c they don't know the writer gets money (clicks/advertisement revenue) by being as bombastic and negative as possible. 🙃

@lynnmedichi I'm sure it happens a lot.I remember when we finally got high speed access out here and I found good researchers on Twitter who did threads and attached links and copies of documents to their threads.I so enjoyed it, because you could read it all for yourself.I did so much reading that first year, or two.I'll readily admit that I'm not reading at that level now. 😀 I don't think I was very social then. I was just reading and reading and reading.
