Never owed the IRS money and I'm suddenly scared the math on my end won't match up with the IRS' math and 2024 will me paying penalties from 2022! If the IRS knows what I owe them anyway, why are they making me go through all these hoops?!

I thought taxes would be the end of me! I ended up paying someone to do the heavy lifting, though still through Turbotax, and now I don't owe the IRS anything. Thank God! More money for a down payment for a forever home!

I got a text from a friend saying Mississippi had just passed a new Jim Crow Law.My first thought was, "Lol, what's new outrage are libs creating?"Because there's no way in hell MS is going back to Jim Crow. I had to look it up using the narrative term because my friend didn't know the actual law.https://web.archive.org/web/20230308020837/https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/three-things-to-know-about-what-critics-are-calling-mississippi-s-jim-crow-bill/ar-AA18e3ZP1)

So I find MSN.com and see that it's HouseBill 1020. I don't bother reading the article, I wanna see what the bill is. I read a whoooooole bunch before I figure out:"Oh, this is to create a new court system in Jackson City." (Capital of MS.)Nothing in the law even hints at any kind of discrimination. There are also no new laws in there either. Basically, the new court is using the pre-existing laws to make judgements.2)

"How is this a Jim Crow law?" I think in confusion.I decide to finally read the MSN.com article. It turns out Jackson has one of the highest murder rates in the US, has so much crime the courts are backed up trying to deal with it, and--oh-- it also just happens to have a large black population. It's racists because the court will be dealing with mostly black people.... is the logic, it seems.3)

Remember that the entire state of MS has one of the biggest black populations in the US. Jackson having a lot of black people is not some amazing unique thing. There are other places with a hearty black population too in the state. It's just that Jackson manages to also have an enormous amount of crime, so much that it needs it own court to deal with it all.4)

The people objecting the most to this appear to be those directly related to the city itself. They are complaining the Legislature is overreaching by forcing a new court system on the city. If I were cynical, I'd say they don't want it because they've got a nice lucrative system in place & this will disrupt their cashflow. If I'm generous, they sincerely don't think it's needed & is a waste of tax dollars that could be better spent on roads.5)

I think the cynical approach might be more accurate. If it was just a matter of wasting tax money, it's an odd thing to label this House Bill as some new Jim Crow Law. Labeling it that way is definitely to get people to hate it without actually reading it or understanding why it was created. Luckily (???) everyone (?????) thinks MS is racist so this kind of hubbub isn't likely to create the drama needed to rescind the bill.6)

Anyway, hope the new courts are clean and pure and don't succumb to corruption (which I suspect plagues a city that crime infested).end)

@SweetIceTea What's sad is my friend wasn't able to read the bill because it was, basically, "too wordy". It makes me wonder how many people never bother reading the factual/sources b/c they're "too complicated" & end up trusting the commentary b/c they don't know the writer gets money (clicks/advertisement revenue) by being as bombastic and negative as possible. 🙃

Been a while since I've been on here. Yikes! Anywho! Saw #SoundofFreedom & WOW, that was a good movie! Very masculine perspective too, which I enjoyed. I think any father, uncle, brother, or to-be-father will be deeply moved by SoF as well as horrified by what's going on. As someone said, the primary "buyers" are men, so for this to stop, it has to come from men. Women are already doing what they can to stop this, but as long as there's a demand, there's a black market. 😰

My husband went a game developer convention in California this week and his laptop was stolen! Not just his, but several other people who were attending too. The thieves tried to take any electronic that wasn't nailed down (a pre-meditated crime of opportunity). I don't have much hope of the CA police actually catching the thieves and getting our stuff back. If they have any intelligence at all, they have a middle man to hand their goods off to immediately after the theft.

The convention had insurance & the planners (??) are pretty sure that should cover the thefts. Even if it doesn't, we also have renters insurance, which I think will cover it too. I wish this wasn't his 3k laptop that got stolen 😫😫😫 so expensive to replace & we'll be eating the up front cost no matter what

@Andre my husband is getting a degree in 3d modeling & animation. A lot of the jobs related to this degree are in CA. Having his laptop stolen the first time he visited the place is not encouraging us to want to live there 😅😬

@nchia Yeah, I already did what I could to lock down his laptop. For that to work the computer has to be turned on and connected to the internet. If the thieves are a little smart they'll wipe the drives before connecting them to the internet 😅

@MMA @nchia That's exactly what my husband was mourning over... we can replace the laptop but not the work. I think I might buy cloud storage after this, just to make sure he can have all his work backed up on a cloud. :((((

@nchia I'm the IT person in the family. I backup my backups (cloud & physical). But with his school laptop, they have things set up a certain way and I didn't mess with that. (I've been known to break things, lol) I'm actually a little surprised they didn't have cloud backups myself but 🤷‍♀️ His laptop was a high end gaming laptop, so it'll probably get resold for $$$$. I'm 99% sure the HD will get wiped for reselling. Though we did give the S/N to the police so there's that..... @MMA

Update: Our renters insurance covered the loss of the laptop. We're now waiting for the report to be completed so my husband can get a new school laptop (school obviously wants proof it was stolen). School informed us that we had to pay for the replacement (duh). Only question now is whether my husband will get the report before his next class starts.
